It's too much like being a mindless copying machine, although even copying takes some skill and intelligence. But I don't get to express my creativity and I don't get to paint exactly what I would most like to paint. It is verrrrrry hard to find something already existing, like a landscape or a photo, that I would really want to paint exactly as it is. Virtually everything is either boring or is not exactly the composition that I would like. I wanted to make my own compositions from my imagination, but that is 100 times harder. I wanted to make a painting of a Roman chariot race last spring, but then I realized I couldn't do it. I wouldn't be able to draw everything realistically from the angle I wanted. I didn't want to just copy a photo from Ben Hur either. I wanted to make it original. But now I think I've figured out how to do it. I read a book on human anatomy and I'm half done with a book on perspective. I also have books on animal anatomy and drawing. I think by using this knowledge I can construct a convincing roman chariot race from my imagination. Another painting I'd like to make is some kind of beach scene, with a girl riding a horse and some big waves in the background. This has its own challenges. I've looked at lots of pictures of beaches, and I'm learning about the characteristics of the water, sand, wet sand, reflections, etc., because when you are not going to just copy but make up a composition, you have to understand about everything, so that you know how something would realistically appear if you rearranged it. I've read Robinson's book about painting oceans, but I've found it more useful to look at a lot of photos and analyze the elements of the beach. I don't like how he renders water either. It's too sloppy.

    Extractions: To art history students, Thomas Cole (1801-1848) is known as the "founder" of the Hudson Valley school of painting, that large and diverse group of artists who found no subject as worthy of their attention as the geography of the new continent. The later work often has an added layer of narrative but the foundation of every painting is always that complete immersion in the tangled, untamed wonders of the new American landscape. In reproduction it is generally the narrative that dominates, simply because that’s what the eye sees first. But standing before even the most manipulative of the story canvases, the viewer does not first see the story. Rather, Cole's brush seduces the viewer, saying only, "Look." He is thus, one assumes, reproducing for our benefit the irresistibly seductive effect that the original American landscape had on him. Though he had no art training until he was in his 20s, the talent developed rapidly. Sufficient fame and money came his way that he was able to settle in the 1830s in the village of Catskill, a hundred miles up the Hudson from New York City.
