A great pitcher during the 1930s and one of baseballâs most memorable characters, Gomez was known both as Lefty for his powerful pitching arm and as Goofy for his sense of humor and antics on and off the field. He was a 20-game winner four times and helped the New York Yankees claim seven AL pennants. Born in Rodeo, California, Vernon L. Gomez signed with the Yankees after a great season in the Pacific Coast League in 1929. During his first full season in the major leagues in 1931, he won 21 games and lost 9 for the Yankees. In 1932 he won 24 games and claimed a World Series win as the Yankees swept the Chicago Cubs. He appeared in the first All-Star Game in 1933 and was named to seven consecutive All-Star teams.
