Raising Standards - The Role of he Assessor 27/12/99 RAISING STANDARDS - THE ROLE OF THE ASSESSOR - Glyn Jones OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS Premier Officials have come under severe pressure - in my opinion unwarranted. Officials in charge have split seconds to make a decision, without the benefit of three or four different angles of play as on TV. Similarly, League of Wales officials are under some pressure, even without the enlightenment of TV. Managers and coaches put great pressure on officials, some more than others. Soccer has always been a fast and open game and mistakes will happen. We are in an age where winning is everything. Whoever loses, someone must take the blame, usually the officials! In the last few seasons, the standard of football has got better, very much better. I will also go further and say that the standards of refereeing have improved very much, and that is down to the hard work Keith Cooper, the Referees Officer for Wales, does. After 26 years as a top flight referee, including a long spell in the Premiership, and five years as a FIFA referee, there is no better man to lead the present team of officials. Of the 21 LoW officials, three are FIFA referees - Keri Richards, Brian Lawlor, and Kevin Parry - and another eight are on the Referees Assistants List. This is not a bad percentage at top level. As assessors, we not only assess the officials but also the club, the standard of dressing rooms, ground organisation, security of referees and their assistants and crowd security, as well as pitches (and I must say that Towns pitch is very much improved) , subs numbers and provision of stretcher.

Back to index Iqbal own goal is harsh on Celts By Ian Whiting Comment Salisbury 1 Farsley Celtic 1 Farsley gained a welcome point from a testing away fixture which helps in the quest to retain their Blue Square Premier status - but it felt like a defeat and heads were bowed on the team bus for the long journey home. The Celts scored almost from the kick off at the start of the second half and looked to be heading for a win which would have lifted them even further clear of the drop zone. Less than four minutes remained when an Amjad Iqbal own goal cost them two points. advertisement In a week which saw neighbours Halifax Town, rivals of the Celts in the top division of non-league soccer, file for administration, the two points would have seen John Deacey's men leapfrog the Shaymen once the regulation ten-point deduction has been ratified. It took Farsley just seconds after the interval to get their noses in front. The ball was quickly sprayed wide from the kick off and Stephen Downes carried it along the flank before flashing a low centre into the area, where Damian Reeves stabbed home from close range.
Extractions: World News ... States Wednesday, June 24, 1998 REUTERS TUNIS: Tunisia soccer officials said today they had sacked World Cup coach Henry Kasperczak after Tunisia's squad failed to qualify for the second round. The Tunisian Football Federation said deputy coach Ali Selmi would replace him temporarily for Tunisia's last Group G match against Romania on Friday.Kasperczak came under strong fire for the squad's poor results when it was beaten 2-0 by England and 1-0 by Colombia. The strongest attack came from Slim Chiboub, the powerful president of Tunisia's first division champions Esperance. Chiboub accused Kasperczak of spoiling Tunisian football reputation and of being the cause of the squad's poor performances in the World Cup. ``(Kasperczak) mocked us and did wrong to the country that welcomed him with his ugly words to a country which respected him,'' Chiboub told Canal Plus Horizons channel. ``I call on officials to study the soccer file and set it right once for all,'' Slim Chiboub said.

The English Premiership's plan to stage an extra round at a variety of overseas venues has been roundly condemned by every man and his blog, if you'll pardon the expression. Michel Platini has dismissed it outright (and hence one can take it as read that Sepp Blatter feels the same way). Most of the potential "hosts" have expressed different levels of disapproval, including Mohammed bin Hammam and, most recently, Frank Lowy (note the embarrassing error in the story's header; News Ltd. careless with football stories? Surely not). Apart from the obvious logistical problems, the most pertinent objection to the proposal is surely that it would exacerbate the European fixture crush, while adding to the players' travel burden as well. Yes, the players are paid exorbitantly by the Premiership clubs for their services these days, but the rigours of gruelling club seasons have their inevitable effect come the summer international tournaments, which are fast becoming exercises in energy-saving smash-and-grab in their latter stages.

The rules were formed in the English college, Eton College, in the year 1815. The rules were fully adopted in 1848. Finally on October 26, 1863, eleven London schools came together to form one set of governing rules to follow that they could agree on. Finally on December 8, 1863 Ruby and soccer split. In 1869 The Soccer Association put the rules of no handling the ball, making the modern game we have today. my link

I get "Server Error! 500: Premature end of script header: php.exe." I'm running Apache 2.0.36 along with PHP 4.2.1 as a CGI (can't seem to get it to work as a module either). Have any ideas why this would be happening and any possible solution. I can't find anything online except other people that are having the same problem, with no response. Either way, thanks so much for the article. I have been looking for something like this for a few days now.
