The time most kids dread and parents look forward to all summer. Yes, it is time to head back to school. It is also time to remind our kids about safety going to and from school and activities. We live in a fast-paced society where safety is sometimes forgotten. Here are some important safety reminders for your children as they begin the new school year. Riding the school bus is still the safest transportation to and from school. However, there are some things to keep in mind, as most school bus incidents occur while entering or exiting the bus. Wait for the bus in a safe place away from the street and traffic. Do not approach the bus until it has come to a complete stop and the driver opens the door. Use the handrail as you enter and exit the bus. When getting off of the bus, make sure that you move completely away from the bus. A good rule of thumb is to walk 10 big steps away from it, if possible. Always keep a safe distance between you and the bus. If you need to cross the street, walk out far enough for the bus driver to see you completely. Wait for all traffic to come to a complete stop and do not cross until the bus driver has signaled for you to do so. Remember that not all drivers adhere to the rules concerning stopped school buses. Always be alert! If possible, try to meet your
