Banking on Santiago Island Geography The Cape Verde Islands are located in the mid-Atlantic Ocean some 450 kilometres(about 300 mi.) off the west coast of Africa. The archipelago includes 10 islands and 5 islets, divided into the windward (Barlavento) and leeward (Sotavento) groups. The main islands in the Barlavento group are Santo Ant£o, S£o Vicente, Santa Luzia, S£o Nicolau, Sal, and Boa Vista; those of the Sotavento group include Maio, Santiago, Fogo, and Brava. All larger islands but Santa Luzia are inhabited. The islands are all volcanic in origin and form two classic island chains similar to Hawaii or the Aleutian isles. The youngest island is Fogo which is also the highest peak 2,829 M altitude and these get progressively older with Sal and Boa Vista having eroded down over millions of years to flat featureless landscapes. Santiago by contrast has fertile lush valleys and steep rugged mountain peaks as is much younger geologically than its northern counterparts.
