Extractions: Main Chicken pox, also spelled chickenpox, is a common childhood disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as human herpes virus 3 (HHV-3), one of the eight herpesviruses known to affect humans. It is characterized by a fever followed by itchy raw pox or open sores. Symptoms of chicken pox are rarely fatal: if it does cause death, it is usually from varicella pneumonia, which occurs more frequently in pregnant women. In the US, 55% of chicken pox deaths were in the over-20 age group. Chicken pox has a two week incubation period and is highly contagious by air transmission two days before symptoms appear. Therefore chicken pox spreads quickly through schools and other places of close contact. Once someone was infected with the disease, they usually develop an immunity and cannot get it again. As the disease is more severe if contracted by an adult, parents have been known to ensure that their children became infected before adulthood. Aspirin shouldn't be used during a chickenpox infection because it can increase the incidence of a potentially deadly condition called Reye's syndrome. Doctors advise that pregnant women who come into contact with chickenpox should contact their doctor immediately as the virus can cause serious problems for the fetus.

Extractions: Chicken pox is a childhood disease generally occurring in late winter to early spring. It is caused by a virus which is transferred from person to person by infected droplets in the air. The virus gets into the air from the respiratory tract or from the fluid of small blisters which are extremely infectious in the first three to four days of their appearance. Following primary infection the virus can lie dormant in the nerve roots of the spine and later on in life can produce shingles. The incubation period for chicken pox is about 14 days and it generally affects children under 10 years of age. One attack confers permanent immunity. The first signs of the disease are an itchy rash associated with a mild fever. The typical lesion is a small blister on a round red base, which bursts producing a crust. This takes about a week to dry and break away from the skin. The rash appears on the scalp and trunk and later spreads to the face and limbs. It can also be present inside the mouth. New lesions appear for 1 to 5 days so that you can see the various stages of blistering and crusting on various parts of the body as the rash progresses. The whole sequence generally lasts a week to no longer than 2 weeks. Complications include secondary bacterial infection which is quite common and may leave a pitted scar. Rare complications include pneumonia in the adults, and encephalitis which is inflammation of the brain.

Approximately three to five percent of vaccinated individuals develop a chickenpox-like rash within 5 to 30 days from vaccination. Causes Chicken pox is caused by exposure to a highly contagious airborne varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The illness typically begins with fever, malaise and a rash. The rash begins as flat red patches that evolve into patches with a central blister, the classic dew drop on a rose petal. These patches then dry and scab. New eruptions occur daily for four to seven days. The average child gets a total of 500 chicken pox sores.

Meningococcal meningitis is an uncommon illness though is very serious. On the other hand, chicken pox is a common illness but very mild. In my generation, we all went through it and we all (well most of us) turned out OK!!! Chicken pox is a very mild illness: older text books describes it as so with serious complications occurring only very rarely, mainly in immuno-compromised children or in those that are already sick with something else. (Current Pediatric Diagnosis and Treatment Lange Medical Publications 1976, Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics, W B Saunders Company 10th Edition 1975, Handbook of Pediatrics, Lange Medical Publications 1975). Today, the authorities are trying to convince us that chicken pox is a serious illness and we should vaccinate against it. It seems that once a vaccine is developed the disease evolves into a serious illness and the use of the vaccine is encouraged. I suppose it is a plot so that the drug company can recover their development costs.
