The profound ethical questions surrounding the prospect of the birth of a human clone have received much scrutiny. In recent months, the debate has included the topic of human embryonic stem cell research , which scientists believe could benefit from experimentation using the procedure pioneered by the scientists who produced Dolly. Nuclear Transplantation The International Perspective Nuclear Transplantation This procedure is known as nuclear transplantation, or somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). It involves removing the nucleus, which contains a cell's DNA, from an egg cell and transplanting the DNA from an adult cell into the enucleated egg. Under certain conditions, the egg then begins to replicate as though it were a fertilized embryo.

Broyde A person without knowledge is surely not good; he who moves hurriedly blunders; Proverbs (Mishle) 19:2. It is the balance between these various needs that drives the Jewish law discussion of all assisted reproductive technology and it is in that spirit that this is intended to be a preliminary analysis of the problem of cloning. An analysis of the implications of cloning found in Jewish law really contains within it three distinctly different problems in need of resolution. The first one discusses whether the cloning process is permissible ( mutar ), prohibited ( assur ), or a good deed ( mitzvah ). However, the determination of whether any particular conduct is good, bad or neutral is not dispositive in addressing the second issue: the familial status of an individual (re)produced through cloning in relationship to other humans generally, and other members of this person's "family" specifically. Finally, even when conduct is permissible or perhaps even a mitzvah, Jewish law recognizes that the (rabbinical) authorities of every generation have the authority to temporarily prohibit that which is permissible based on the perception that this intrinsically permissible activity could lead to other more serious violations.

Since the '30s experiments have been made in producing identical individuals by artificial twin splitting, a procedure which can be improperly called cloning. The practice of twin splitting in the zootechnical field has been spreading in experimental barns as an incentive to the multiple production of select exemplars. The cloning of human beings, many concluded, would be biologically wrong, socially misguided, and morally and ethically repugnant. Yet some scientists began touting the enormous benefits that human cloning might bring. These include helping infertile couples who have had no luck with other infertility treatments to have children or allowing a parent bearing a gene for a debilitating disease such as Huntington's chorea to avoid passing the gene onto his or her child. In theory, specialists could also use cloning to grow embryonic stem cells into vital organs, blood, or tissue, which doctors could then use for transplants, transfusions, and other replacement interventions. Here we present three points of view on this highly contentious issue. All three scientists are experts on the subject who all have the same facts at their disposal. Yet Dr. Lee Silver, a Princeton molecular biologist, remains bullish on the idea of cloning humans, while Dr. Rudolf Jaenisch, professor of biology at MIT, just as adamantly opposes the idea, under any circumstances.
