Ever since we made our foundation in Peru in 1976 we have had requests from several dioceses to found a monastery in Ecuador but it was not until the courtesy visit paid to Bishop Hugolino when travelling through his diocese in early 2002, that he prevailed upon our sisters with heart-rending entreaty to help his people by making the witness of our life of Divine praise and Eucharistic adoration available to them in their spiritual need. In July 2002 foundations were laid for more of the monastery buildings and in August the church was completed in time for Bishop Hugolino to concelebrate with the Apostolic nuncio to Ecuador at a Mass of First Profession of one of our sisters. In these months we also managed to sink a viable well on our property so that the monastery has its own supply of fresh drinking water. In keeping with our apostolate of Benedictine hospitality the community has worked hard to provide facilities for retreats and opportunities for Eucharistic adoration for people of the surrounding areas and further afield. The Bishop wishes us to provide retreat facilities in order that we can draw people into our Benedictine life of praise and worship and so foster the prayer-life of the diocese. Two small guest cabins have been completed enabling retreatants to stay and various works of the apostolate include Bible study and prayer groups, and Oblates. A large garden for the laity has been landscaped where a pilgrimage shrine of Our Lady of Cisne is situated, blessed by Bishop Hugolino on 29 December 2003.

In 1972, the construction of the Andian pipeline, which brought oil from the east to the coast was completed, making Ecuador South America's second largest oil producer. That same year a nationalist military junta overthrew the government, remaining in power until 1979 when more democratic constitutional measures were implemented. By 1982, the government faced an economic crisis, characterized by high inflation, budget deficits, a falling currency, mounting debt service, and uncompetitive industries, leading to chronic government instability. Many years of mismanagement, starting with the mishandling of the country's debt during the 1970s military regime, have left the country essentially ungovernable. By the mid 90s, the government of Ecuador has been characterized by a weak executive branch that struggles to appease the ruling classes, represented in the legislative and judiciary. The last three democratically elected presidents have failed to finish their terms during that period.

In the late 1800s, world demand for cocoa tied the economy to commodity exports and led to migrations from the highlands to the agricultural frontier on the coast. A coastal-based liberal revolution in 1895 under Eloy Alfaro reduced the power of the clergy and opened the way for capitalist development. The end of the cocoa boom produced renewed political instability and a military coup in 1925. The 1930s and 1940s were marked by populist politicians such as five-time president Jose Velasco Ibarra. In January 1942, Ecuador signed the Rio Protocol to end a brief war with Peru the year before; Ecuador agreed to a border that conceded to Peru much territory Ecuador previously had claimed in the Amazon. After World War II, a recovery in the market for agricultural commodities and the growth of the banana industry helped restore prosperity and political peace. From 1948-60, three presidentsbeginning with Galo Plazawere freely elected and completed their terms.
