Additional Resources for Hemophilia Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder that slows down the blood clotting process. People who have hemophilia often have longer bleeding after an injury or surgery. People who have severe hemophilia have spontaneous bleeding into the joints and muscles. Hemophilia occurs more commonly in males than in females. The two most common types of hemophilia are hemophilia A (also known as classic hemophilia) and hemophilia B (also known as Christmas disease). People who have hemophilia A have low levels of a blood clotting factor called factor eight (FVIII). People who have hemophilia B have low levels of factor nine (FIX). The two types of hemophilia are caused by permanent gene changes (mutations) in different genes. Mutations in the FVIII gene cause hemophilia A. Mutations in the FIX gene cause hemophilia B. Proteins made by these genes have an important role in the blood clotting process. Mutations in either gene keep clots from forming when there is an injury, causing too much bleeding that can be difficult to stop. Hemophilia A is the most common type of this condition. One in 5,000 to 10,000 males worldwide have hemophilia A. Hemophilia B is less common, and it affects 1 in 20,000 to 34,500 males worldwide.
Extractions: WHAT IS HEMOPHILIA? This special genetic code, passed to an unborn child, is supposed to signal a series of steps that help control bleeding by clotting. The steps needed to form a clot depend upon a series of proteins called factors. This error in genetic code means that some of the factors are missing or that they are not working correctly in a person with hemophilia. This causes people with hemophilia to bleed longer but not faster. Surface bleeds, on the outside of the body, are fairly easy to stop, even for people with hemophilia. Internal bleeding, such as bleeding into joints or muscles, can mean that it is only possible for a clot to form after the person has taken medication called clotting factor. More than 15,000 people have hemophilia A or hemophilia B in the United States. There are other bleeding disorders where one or more of the clotting factors is missing. People with hemophilia A are missing factor VIII and those with hemophilia B are missing factor IX, others may be missing factors I, II, VII, etc.

Extractions: What is hemophilia? Hemophilia is a rare genetic bleeding disorder that almost always occurs in males. A person has hemophilia when he or she inherits problems with certain blood- clotting factors , making them unable to work properly. Blood-clotting factors are needed to help stop bleeding after a cut or injury and to prevent spontaneous bleeding. The hemophilia gene can contain many different errors, leading to different degrees of abnormality in the amount of clotting factor produced. There are two major types of hemophilia: Hemophilia is usually classified by how severe it is. There are three levels of hemophilia, although they can overlap. The severity of the disease is defined by how much clotting factor is produced and in what situations bleeding most often occurs. Mild hemophilia: Clotting factor VIII or clotting factor IX level is 5% of normal or greater. Mild hemophilia might not be recognized unless there is excessive bleeding after a major injury or surgery.

FDA Licenses New Hemophilia Treatment Feb 21, 2008 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today licensed a treatment for hemophilia A, a rare, hereditary bloodclotting disorder that affects http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2008/NEW01799.html
Extractions: 888-INFO-FDA The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today licensed a treatment for hemophilia A, a rare, hereditary blood-clotting disorder that affects approximately 15,000 individuals, almost exclusively males, in the United States. The new treatment, called Xyntha Antihemophilic Factor (Recombinant) Plasma/Albumin Free, is a genetically engineered version of factor VIII, a protein essential for the clotting of blood. Factor VIII, known as an anti-hemophilic factor, is missing or decreased in patients with hemophilia A. Xyntha is licensed for the control and prevention of bleeding, which can occur spontaneously or after an accident or injury in patients diagnosed with hemophilia A. Xyntha is also licensed to help prevent surgical bleeding in this patient population. Xyntha is manufactured using recombinant DNA techniques that enable scientists to create new DNA strands with specific traits, such as the capacity to produce a specific protein.
