The coexistence of significant minority faiths with the majority faith of Hinduism has by no means always been peaceable; Hindu-Muslim and Hindu-Sikh tensions (often fanned by motives other than religious ones) have, in the past, resulted in many deaths. The Ramajanmabhoomi movement, whose demands to build a Hindu temple on what they claim to be the birthplace of Rama in Ayodhya resulted in the destruction by a mob of the Babri Masjid (a mosque which they declared to have been built after the destruction of a previous temple) in 1992, has clearly been able to generate considerable popular support. Such developments pose a serious threat to the future of secularism in India. It could be argued that this recent so-called Hindu "fundamentalism" (a contradiction in terms, as Hinduism has no defined fundaments) is an effort to forge a singular national culture on religious lines from rich and diverse traditions. The inculcation of such ideas has been facilitated by the widespread access to television, latterly satellite television, and its powerful cultural messages. The same media have also spread another value-set which to some extent has served to dissipate the call of religion—that of a Western-style consumer society.

Family also provides connections for jobs and even aids religion in determining social standing. Not many fields of employment in India are very technical, and those that are highly technical employ very few workers. Rather than sitting back and waiting for foreign aid, however, the Indian worker goes out and makes a living with what he or she can. When the job market is depressed and jobs are unavailable, the poor usually do favors for the wealthy or influential in the hopes that their religious beliefs of kharma will indeed deliver a return for them. POLITICS The realm of the rich and powerful, politics is limited to a few very elite families. The vast majority of India does not have the benefit of running for political office, no matter what the official form of government may be. To do so without the permission of local politicians is seen as disrespectful, and is usually met with strong reprisals.

Of course, India's creativity continues to thrive, its most lively contemporary expression being filmi culture. The latter is difficult for Western ears to immediately appreciate, but it doesn't take long to get a feel for it. Clothes in India Light cotton clothes are useful almost anywhere in India at any time of year. It is a good idea to have some very lightweight long sleeve cotton and trousers for evenings, preferable light in colour, as they also give some protection against mosquitoes. Between Dec - Feb it can be cool at night even on the plains in N and E India, and at altitudes above 1,500m right across India some woolens are essential. Dress is rarely formal. In the large cities short sleeve shirt and ties are often worn for business. For traveling loose clothes are most comfortable.
