The tiny ticks, some the size of poppy seeds, may stay on your body for hours to days. The tick engorges itself with blood. In the southeastern U.S. the black-legged tick ( Ixodes scapularis ) is the suspected vector. The disease was first identified along the Connecticut River in 1975, and is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States. However, most cases are reported in the northeastern, Mid-Atlantic, and north central regions of the country. Transmission Cycle Normally, the life cycle of the black-legged tick begins with eggs in the spring. The eggs hatch into larvae and then feed once before they molt into nymphs and go dormant until the following spring. Then they feed again and molt into adults. The larvae and nymphs feed on rodents, and it is usually at this stage when the tick becomes infected. The adults feed on larger mammals, including humans. Studies have shown that both nymph and adult ticks need to be attached for more than 24 hours to effectively transmit the infection. For this reason, it is important to regularly check for ticks and remove them immediately. Symptoms and Treatment Between 60 and 80% of people will develop a red, "bull's eye" rash (erythema migrans or EM) three to 30 days after being bitten by an infected tick. This rash does not always appear at the site of the bite, and may occur on another part of the body. Other symptoms include fever, headache, chills, fatigue, stiff neck or muscle aches. Later stage symptoms may not appear until months or years after the bite and can include problems with the brain, heart, joints and muscles. Patients treated with antibiotics early after the infection usually recover quickly and completely. A few patients, especially those diagnosed in the later stages of disease, may have persistent or recurrent symptoms. These patients may benefit from a second course of antibiotic therapy. However, longer courses of antibiotic treatment have not been shown to be beneficial and have been linked to serious complications.

I'd heard about climbers getting chiggers at the Gunks. The bitessimilar in appearance to a very large mosquito biteare intensely itchy and appear in warm, moist, constricted areas. My bite hardly itched at all. "These aren't so bad," I thought. My rash didn't look anything like a bulls-eye until day 6 Over the next few days the bite increased in size, but it still didn't itch much. Then a red rash started to appear. Each day it grew larger. The entire area felt warm to the touch and looked kind of puffy. Finally, on day six, I made a doctor's appointment. "Make sure you get tested for Lyme disease," a friend said. I shrugged it off. I'd never seen a tick and the rash looked nothing like a bulls-eye; it was oblong and mottled with a ragged edge. The next morning I took a quick peek in the mirror. The rash had grown again and now I could see a vague bulls-eye pattern. So I was only mildy surprised when the doctor took one look at it and called it Lyme disease. A stroll through the internet confirmed the diagnosis for me

The cause of Lyme disease is a bacterium that usually lives in animals like deer or mice - Borrelia burgdorferi. Ticks will pick up the bacteria by biting an infected animal. The tick can then pass the bacteria on to a human when the tick bites them. The blacklegged tick is also known as the deer or bear tick Ticks like to live in the grass, shrubs, and low trees branches. When a person or animal passes by, they will attack themselves to their host and begin to feed. This is when the bacteria are transferred. Ticks can sometimes be hard to see, especially if they are immature. Immature ticks are about the same size as a poppy seed. Lyme disease is a progressive disease that has three stages. The severity of symptoms may vary from person to person, and not everyone will exhibit all the symptoms. Stage 1 Stage one begins with a distinctive bulls eye shaped rash for most, although 20 to 30 percent of those infected may never have a rash. The rash is called erythema migrans. The rash appears typically 1 to 2 weeks after the tick bite, but may show up as late as a month later. Another appearance that the rash can take is a solid red expanding ring. The rash may feel warm to the touch, but it is not typically painful or itchy. The rash may look like a bruise on people with darker skin tones. After about a month, the rash will clear up. Whether or not a rash is present, other symptoms of Lyme disease at this stage are:
