No seed seems to be too hard for the bill of the macaw to crack, and their diet is quite varied, from the seeds of the mahognay to those of the rubber tree. Macaws are curious birds and will try to eat just about anything resembling a seed that they can get their beak on. But this could lead to serious problems in the rain forest, where some of the deadliest poisons in the world are manufactured by its botanical inhabitants. C harles Munn has been studying macaws for years and he asserts that many of the seeds macaws eat are in fact toxic, particularly in the dry season, (August through September), when the picking are especially slim. So, how then do these birds survive this fatal fare? In his years of watching macaw behavior in the Amazon, Munn noticed that the birds spent at least two to three hours per day at a clay and mineral lick along a riverbed. He was able to identify how often birds went to the lick and how much time they spent there by using the distinctive facial markings of each bird as an identifying charcteristic. At first, Munn thought that the birds were just using the clay lick to obtain minerals their diet might not otherwise provide. But the discovery by one of his graduate students of the toxic elements in the seeds made him rethink his ideas.

The Field Guide to the Wildlife of Costa Rica has this to say about the Great Green: " The intense green-and-blue body, highlighted by red tail feathers, make this imposing member of the parrot family a stunning symbol of the country's diminishing rainforests. Unfortunately, it is a victim of both deforestation and the illegal pet trade." The Great Green ranges widely across the Caribbean lowlands in seach of food but the amount of suitable remaining nesting habitat appears very small, the number of feeding trees is declining, and the number of birds left is very low - probably only thirty to thirty-five pairs. " (That was in 2000). The bill of this macaw is larger than that of the Scarlet macaw. It is adapted to cracking open the very tough nuts of the swamp almond tree (Dipteryx panamensis). The life cycle of the Great Green is tied very closely to Dipteryx trees it nests in hollow cavities of this tree and depends on its fruits as a major food. Below, a Scarlet macaw competes with a Great Green for food. These stunning macaws may live more than sixty years.

For those who are intimidated by the very large beak of the larger macaw species such as the scarlet, blue and gold, and green-winged macaws, you will find these medium-sized parrots can make great companions. The smallest of the mini-macaws is the Hahn's or Noble macaw. They are on average 12 inches in length. Many owners who have multiple species of macaws report that the Hahn's are the most adaptable, friendly, and trainable of the group. The mini-macaws have a shorter life-span than the large macaws. They live on average 20-25 years, as opposed to the 60-80 year lifespan of some large species. The personality of the Hahn's macaw is often said to resemble that of conures; even the distinctive white area surrounding the eye makes them resemble their South American cousins. Diet should be varied, with a medium hookbill seed mix, medium-sized pellet, fresh vegetables, occasional fruit, and some grains. Hahn's macaws like to chew wood, so be sure to include some nice toys for them to exercise their beaks.

Despite its reputation as eco-nirvana, Costa Rica's deforestation and poaching for the pet trade have reduced the once abundant Scarlet Macaws to three breeding territories and less than 1,000 birds. Costa Rica's other macaw; the Great Green (Ara ambigua) is even more endangered down to an estimated 30 breeding pairs. Hope for saving Costa Rica's macaws comes partially from an unlikely source-a retired American couple in their 70s with dwindling finances. Margot and Richard Frisius came to Costa Rica in 1980 in the first wave of the American pensionado movement. Their plan was to enjoy their eight-acre ranch, the former estate of British botanist Sir Charles Lankester the bromeliad- laden Flor de Mayo. Richard's hobby was collecting macaws and he dreamed of owning each of the world's 16 species. Richard ran Pan Am's maintenance operation in Guyana and came to Costa Rica with just a few birds. His hobby grew into an obsessive mission to give something back to his adopted country.

Macaws do not occur naturally outside of these locations, and in general wouldn't survive without our husbandry in most parts of the world. That's my speech for now. You are, of course, entitled to your own opinion.

Nope, they are parrots, in the Family Psittacidae, subfamily Loriinae. There are fifty-six species of lories, with numerous distinct sub-species. Also referred to as the "brush tongued" parrots, these dazzling clowns of the bird world frequent the flowering trees and shrubs of the tropical South Pacific. Generally found in flocks, they range throughout the islands of Indonesia, French Polynesia, New Guinea, and Australia. Lory or lorikeet? The difference between the two is approximately the same as the difference between a parrot and a parakeet. Lory generally refers to a bird with a short tail, while lorikeets have a long tail. The words are synonymous. As I recall when visiting Australia several years ago, all were called lorikeets regardless of size or shape of the tail. Re: size, lories range from the tiny Wilhelmina's Lorikeet Charmosyna wilhelminae 5" (13cm) to the small amazon sized Yellow-streaked Lory Chalcopsitta sintillata sintillata and the Duivenbode's Lory C. duivenbodei duivenbodei at 12" (30cm). The award for the largest lory overall would have to go to the beautiful Stella's Lorikeet Charmosyna papou stellae 15 1/2" (39cm) but the Stella's body is a mere 7" (18cm) while the long central tail feathers make up the difference. To me, one of the most beautiful birds on earth! Lories have extremely strong feet as well as super sharp nails. They spend more time hanging sideways and upside down from branches, than sitting up-right when feeding. They will even hang from the side of the cage to eat rather than sit on a perch. Some species will use their foot as a "hand" when feeding, similar to the larger parrots, while others have not exhibited this behavior. One partner of a pair may hold a grape with it's foot while both feed from it.
