   Extractions: Jump to: navigation search Organic chemistry is a discipline within chemistry which involves the scientific study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions , and preparation (by synthesis or by other means) of chemical compounds consisting primarily of carbon and hydrogen , which may contain any number of other elements, including nitrogen oxygen , the halogens as well as phosphorus silicon and sulfur The original definition of "organic" chemistry came from the misconception that organic compounds were always related to life processes. However, organic molecules can be produced by processes not involving life, and not only organic compounds support life on Earth, as life as we know it also depends on inorganic chemistry ; for example, many enzymes rely on transition metals such as iron and copper ; and materials such as shells, teeth and bones are part organic, part inorganic in composition. Apart from elemental carbon, only certain classes of carbon compounds (such as oxides carbonates , and carbides ) are conventionally considered inorganic.

March, Introduction to General, Organic and Biochemistry th Ed., Harcourt College Publishers, 2001 Course Meeting Lecture Discussion: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:00-11:00 a.m. Laboratory: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00-10:45 a.m. Each student is expected to meet for the lecture and laboratory sessions during the scheduled times. Because of the compressed nature of the six-week summer session, it is imperative that each meeting be attended. Each day of lecture-discussion meeting in the compressed summer session covers nearly the same material that would be covered during a week in a traditional semester. As much as possible, laboratory work will correlate with lecture topics. Students missing laboratory will receive no laboratory grade and will not be permitted to make up missed laboratory experiments. Exams and Grading Evaluation will be based on laboratory reports, assigned problem sets from the textbook, and unannounced quizzes. Failure to complete an assignment by the due date will result in only partial credit being obtained. Students are responsible for authenticating their own assignments. This means that the student may be asked to explain their work. This is simply a check against possible plagiarism. Failure to satisfactorily comply can result in failing the assignment.
