Depending on the sinus cavities involved, pain occurs in the forehead, between the eyes, or in the mouth area. The following list these by generic names: Decongestants Mucolytic agents Topical decongestants Antihistamines H1 specific Steroids There is little science and much individual opinion about the treatment of the common cold. We recommend nasal saline, p.o. garlic, horseradish and lots of water. Chicken soup is recommended as a treatment for the common cold. Its efficacy is probably related to the garlic. It is therefore an excellent treatment for it contains fluids, salts and the garlic which stimulates rhinorrhea. Antihistamines concentrate and increase the viscosity of nasal mucus and impair mucociliary clearance. They are therefore counterproductive. They may provide benefit for individuals with allergic rhinitis. Topical decongestants are addictive, but many physicians recommend their judicious use. Oral decongestants remain efficacious. Systemic steroids suppress immunity and are not normally prescribed. Topical nasal steriods are indicated for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Their benefit for infection and anatomic abnormaltities has not been investigated.

A Harvard study showed that fatigue and pain scores of sinusitis patients were similar or worse than a group 20 years older with congestive heart failure, lung disease, or back pain. "Chronic fatigue is a condition that frustrates both doctors and their patients since treatments directed at just the symptoms without knowing the cause are typically ineffective," said Alexander C. Chester, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center and principal investigator of the pilot study. "While sinusitis will not be the answer for everyone who comes to an internist with unexplained fatigue or pain, this study does suggest that it should be considered as part of a patient's medical evaluation." Through his private internal medicine practice, Chester questioned 297 patients, noting unexplained chronic fatigue in 22%, unexplained chronic pain in 11%, and both in 9%. While these numbers are consistent with previous studies, Chester observed an unusual connection between patients with chronic pain or fatigue: prevalent sinus symptoms. Sinus symptoms were nine times more common on average in patients with unexplained chronic fatigue than the control group, and six times more common in patients with unexplained chronic pain. In addition, sinus symptoms were more common in patients with unexplained fatigue than in patients with fatigue explained by a mental or physical illness, suggesting the syndrome of unexplained fatigue is more closely associated with sinusitis than are other types of fatigue.

Extractions: A 35-year-old man was brought to the hospital after sustaining injuries associated with the tsunami in Southeast Asia on December 26, 2004. The patient had inhaled seawater when he nearly drowned. There have been suggestions, based on studies of allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis, that intra-nasal corticosteroids (INCS) may relieve symptoms and hasten recovery in acute sinusitis due to their anti-inflammatory properties. A critical systematic review of the literature found four well-conducted, randomized placebo-controlled intervention studies, involving 1943 participants treated for 15 or 21 days. The results suggest that there may be a modest effect with INCS in the resolution or improvement of symptoms. Only minor adverse events were reported. PND comes from inflammation in the nasal passages (rhinitis) and/or sinuses (sinusitis).
