Extractions: A spinal cord injury refers to any trauma which results in damage to the spinal cord. The type of symptoms produced will vary according to the severity of the damage and the location along the spinal cord (Spinal Cord Injuries Australia 2004). The spinal cord controls both motor (muscle) and sensory nerves. As such, damage to the spinal cord may result in loss or reduction of muscle movement and strength, and/or loss or reduction of sensation (an ability to feel touch, pressure, temperature, etc) on the skin surface (Spinal Cord Injuries Australia 2004). The symptoms will vary greatly depending on the location and severity of the injury. The higher up the spine the trauma, the more of the body will be affected below that level. Spinal cord injuries in the lower back (lumbar and sacral levels) will result in symptoms occurring in the legs and usually the pelvis. Injuries in the central back (thoracic level) will also involve trunk muscles and organs, such as bladder and bowel control (Tintinalli et al 2004). Trauma to the neck (cervical level) will also involve reduced function in the arms and shoulders. Upper cervical trauma, near the base of the skull, may also result in difficulties with breathing and body temperature regulation (Tintinalli et al 2004).

Trauma to the spinal cord is commonly associated with damage to the spine itself. Often, a fracture of the spine occurs in relation to the injured central nervous system tissue. Diagnosis: Patients with spinal cord injury need to be thoroughly examined on admission to assess any preservation of function, including peri-anal and rectal examinations and testing of all reflexes and motor and sensory functions. Sematosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) are also a possible adjunctive test. They examine the ability of the spinal cord to transmit impulses by stimulating an area of the leg or arm with a weak electrical current, and determining whether or not this stimulus can be detected over the corresponding part of the brain. Wherever possible, radiographic studies (x-rays, CT scan) need to be performed in a timely manner. An

That's the question Stacy Fritz hopes to answer through a new project funded by the S.C. Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund. Fritz, a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Exercise Science, plans to work with 16 clients during the next two years, most of whom have exhausted their regular insurance benefits for physical therapy related to their injuries. "Most people with incomplete spinal cord injuries have something sparedsome ability to stand for a short time or to sit up and move from bed to chair," Fritz said. "What would happen if we bombard them with intensive therapy for several hours a day? Will it help them regain some of what was lost?" To join the program, clients must be able, with assistance, to stand for two minutes and walk 10 feet. Fritz and her team concentrate on improving gait, balance, and mobility by working with the clients for three hours a day for 10 days. The sessions, held in the Arnold School of Public Health's new research center, put participants on a treadmill for hours, suspended in place by straps and simulating a walking motion to improve their sensations of gait and balance. The therapy also works on improving simple transition movementsfrom bed to chair, for examplethat might make it easier for participants and their caregivers to perform such tasks after the therapy concludes. Participants go home with with the knowledge of new activities to continue to work on improving physical abilities.
