These include businesses of every kind, as well as nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations. Our local staff visit each CAPA internship site, many of which are frequent recipients of CAPA interns. Students are placed in sites that best meet their individual interests, abilities and academic background. The internships are within commuting distance of the center. Students participate in an interactive seminar to prepare them for their internship experience. Group orientation exercises are used to examine issues of culture and integration, and focused individual sessions examine site-specific information. Students are monitored throughout their internships to ensure that they are receiving appropriate training and guidance. At the end of each session, students evaluate their experience. These evaluations are shared with their home campus. Conceptually, the undergraduate internship provides students with a scaffolded apprenticeship experience. It is intermediary between a brief service-learning activity and a pre-professional graduate school internship, allowing the situation of advanced undergraduate students in their zone of proximal development (Vygotsky, 1962) where there may be continued refinement of skills and interests, and illumination of potential career paths. There are many areas where an undergraduate internship may be served. My main interest is in gerontology and thus I have sponsored internships in adult-day care centers, nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitative and geriatric medicine centers, mental health services, pastoral counseling programs, and community outreach services. However, I have also facilitated internships in the areas of college counseling programs, parole and probation programs, local police departments, and human resource offices of local businesses. Each has provided the student a wide range of activities and opportunities for professional involvement and learning. The learning goals of the internship are to assist the student in integrating theory and research learned in the classroom with the practical experiences encountered in the internship.

Practicums or internships that allow students to work in a career setting in a different country with tools gained through their UM education can become a highlight of the students degree program. Awarding academic credit for the practicum towards degree program requirements is an added incentive for students to participate. What is meant by practicum? Each academic area will likely have its own understanding for how practical experience that directly relates to classroom theory can best be appropriately applied. Many times, though not always, it will involve an arrangement between the University of Manitoba faculty unit and an external practicum site provider. The site provider must have the capacity to take in, supervise and train the student. Remuneration or a compensation fee may or may not be awarded or charged.
