Extractions: Home Sport Info Swimming In ancient times, a form of sculpture called stone relief was a popular way of recording cultural or other significant events. Stone relief, paintings on stone walls and other artefacts provide evidence suggesting many of the world's ancient civilisations swam, including the Egyptians, the Phoenicians, Persians, Romans and Greeks, and as far back as 2000 years ago, swimming competitions were held in Japan. The modern sport of swimming can be traced back to English clubs in the 1830s, when breaststroke was the most common form. An important and historical race in London in 1844 was the defining moment for freestyle swimming. The race attracted competitors from around the world, including Native Americans, who won the race easily using a fast windmill type of action (similar to front crawl) instead of the breastroke used by the English and other competitors. The first modern Olympic Games had only four swimming events, three of them freestyle. The second Olympics in Paris in 1900 included the following three unusual swimming events:

Extractions: Added on 01/20/2006 to Articles Directory / Sport / Swimming / Swimming history The Pre-Olympic swimming era was introduced with new meaning and purpose. Along with pure utilitarian use it was regarded now as a sport that was a test of endurance and the limits of human body and will, and hence a matter of national pride and public concern. As a consequence it featured the beginning of swimming clubs and swimming records history and the development of all the basic swimming techniques and styles. Added on 01/20/2006 to Articles Directory / Sport / Swimming / Swimming history The primary goals of swimming in ancient history had less to do with relaxation and health, and more to with the military - its applications for life saving and survival activities. Since pre-historic times, swimming in stone ages and throughout history was a part of everyday life. Swimming in the Middle Ages finally introduced the aspect of competition. And since then, teaching children to swim was regarded a part of the common education.

A series of reliefs from 850 BCE in the Nimrud Gallery of the British Museum show swimmers, mostly in military context, often using swimming aids. In Japan swimming was one of the noble skills of the Samurai, and historic records describe swimming competitions in 36 BCE organized by emperor Suigui (spelling unclear), which are the first known swimming races. The Germanic folklore describes swimming, which was used successfully in wars against the Romans. Swimming competitions are also known from that time.

Written references date back up to 2000 B.C. In 1538 Nicolas Wynman, German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book. Competitive swimming in Europe started around 1800, mostly using breaststroke. The front crawl, then called the trudgen was introduced in 1873 by John Arthur Trudgen, copying it from Native Americans. Swimming was part of the first modern 1896 Summer Olympics games in Athens. In 1900 backstroke was included as an Olympic Event. In 1902 the trudgen was improved by Richard Cavill, using the flutter kick. In 1908, the world swimming association Federation Internationale de Natation was formed. Butterfly stroke was first a variant of Breaststroke, until it was accepted as a separate style in 1952.
