Extractions: I admit it - I'm a telescope junkie. Backyard, mountaintop, optical, infrared, orbiting, any flavor. I do have the good fortune to be in a profession that doesn't consider this too much of an aberration. To show what kinds of projects can be done with various instruments (at least the kinds I've thought of), here's a gallery of observatories and telescopes I've used with some sample data and results. Since astrophysics now has (and needs) access to much of the electromagnetic spectrum, there are optical, infrared, radio, ultraviolet, and X-ray facilities to be found. For each picture, a click will get you the full-sized version. There is a mix of pictures of and data through each telescope. Where one exists, I've included links to the "official" WWW sites for these instruments, and to the TerraServer overhead imagery. Some of the USGS images are included here. Some images are still to be added, and all the listed sites will eventually have their own information and image pages. About the picture above: this 30-second exposure taken on 20 December 1999 shows a brilliant flare (visual magnitude about -6) from the Iridium 62 satellite seen over Kitt Peak , as viewed from MDM Observatory . Lyra is rising in the background with Vega at left. More information on Iridium flares (and other satellite viewing opportunities) may be found at the Heavens-Above site , especially now that the future of the Iridium communications constellation is in less doubt than before.

Every time a large telescope is built, its designers must re-think the challenges, check every application, and improve on what has been done before. The 6.5-meter Baade and Clay telescopes were built by the Carnegie Institution of Washington at its Las Campanas Observatory in Chile on behalf of the Magellan Project, a collaborative effort by the Carnegie Institution, University of Arizona, Harvard University, University of Michigan, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Magellan Consortium consists of more than 200 senior astronomers, 100 postdoctoral astronomers, and nearly 100 Ph.D. students. Each partner has its own scientific agenda for the telescopes and assigns its share of telescope usage.

In recent years the remainder of the electromagnetic spectrum has revealed extensive information about our Universe. NRAO 140 Foot Telescope The first non-visual spectral region that was used extensively for astronomical observations was the radio frequency band. Telescopes observing at these wavelengths are commonly called radio telescopes . Although they do not look like optical telescopes, radio telescopes are built to accomplish the same gathering and focussing tasks on radio frequency radiation that reflecting telescopes perform on visual frequency light. The adjacent image shows the 140 foot antenna of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia. Radio telescopes are used for many purposes, but let us describe two here explicitly: the mapping of neutral hydrogen concentrations using the 21 centimeter spin-flip transition in hydrogen, and the use of multiple radio telescopes operated as if they were a single telescope of very high resolution. A neutral hydrogen atom (H I) consists of 1 proton and 1 electron. The proton and electron spin like tops with their spin axes either parallel or anti-parallel. When hydrogen atoms switch from the parallel to the anti-parallel configuration they emit radio waves with a wavelength of 21 centimeters and a corresponding frequency of exactly 1420 MHz.
