She was born December 7, 1873, near Winchester, Virginia. When she was about 10 years old her family moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska, which is the setting for a number of her best-known novels and short stories. Educated at the University of Nebraska, she was a newspaper woman and teacher in Pittsburgh before going to New York in 1906 to work as an editor on McClure's Magazine.
