His most famous work, For the Term of his Natural Life , grew out of an assignment for the Argus (Melobourne) newspaper to research Tasmania's convict past. The novel, which deals with the transportation system and convict life, appeared in serialized form in the Australian Journal from 1870 to 1872 under the title His Natural Life .
