Extractions: 3. EXTREMAL OPTIMIZATION APPLIED TO THE RADIATOR PROBLEM The EO algorithm method can be applied readily to the above combinatorial problem. However, in order to assess its efficiency when compared to another popular meta-heuristic, the SA method is also used here to solve the radiator problem. The SA method is inspired on a physical process of slow cooling of initially melted material. This process looks for obtaining perfect crystals that, at the end of cooling, the crystal network has the smallest possible internal energy. In the process of cooling, the molecules move in the interior of the mixture randomly, positioning themselves in a crystal network when the temperature is reduced. If the cooling is too fast, the crystal network cannot be perfectly homogeneous, and the internal energy will be greater than a perfect crystal arrangement. In the latter case this means to fall in a local minimum, making an analogy with the optimization process. The search in the SA algorithm is initiated at some point of the search space. The next point is randomly chosen in a vicinity of the previous point, and then the value of the objective function in the two points is compared. If the second point has a smaller
