The finding contradicts previous studies that showed that Taser shocks did not cause heart disturbances in pigs, whose hearts are similar to those in humans. John G. Webster, a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Wisconsin who conducted the new study, said the earlier studies contained serious errors because they did not account for the fact that pigs have a thick layer of muscle insulating their hearts from their skin. Humans do not. Dr. Webster removed the muscle from the pigs' chests and placed Taser barbs close to their hearts before shocking the animals. "The previous research made a mistake," Dr. Webster said. "I was a little surprised. But I believe this research more accurately reflects the anatomy of humans." While most Taser shots land too far from the heart to be lethal, barbs that penetrate the spaces between the ribs that surround the heart may have the potential to cause electrocution, he said. Steve Tuttle, a spokesman for Taser International, which makes the weapons, said Dr. Webster's research was flawed and did not reflect the way that Tasers were used in humans. The current from a Taser shock is dispersed through the body rather than running directly into the heart, Mr. Tuttle said in an e-mail statement. The earlier studies on pigs were financed by Taser International. The Justice Department paid for Mr. Webster's study, which is not yet completed.     Extractions: I would imagine the last intervening event in his life is the most likely thing that killed him. Maybe he had a preexisting condition, some drugs in his system (we'll find out eventually), but he didn't drop dead of those during his 13-hour flight, or his 10 hours in the airport...until he got tasered.

Kroll, PhD, FACC, FHRS Since cocaine is dangerous in so many ways, some uninformed individuals are tempted to assume that it must also be dangerous for electrocution. In fact, the opposite is true. Cocaine intoxication actually makes it harder to electrocute someone. It is well documented that cocaine has strong effects on the heart such as dramatically raising the heart rate and blood pressure. [i] Cocaine usage also significantly increases the risk of a heart attack. [ii] Thus, the natural, although incorrect, assumption is that cocaine also makes it easier to electrocute someone. I.e. , electrically induce VF. What is surprising — even to some cardiologists — is that this natural assumption is wrong. Most scientific studies have shown that cocaine makes electrocution more difficult — not easier. [iii] [iv] [v] Based on a careful review of the scientific literature, TASER has found that the presence of cocaine does not increase the already low risk of fibrillation. And, this conclusion was apparently sound as America’s most famous Heart Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic, has recently soundly confirmed these findings.
