He's promised to stay in his rental house for a full year and live fully through the net to prove e-commerce can provide anything you could ask for and that you'd never have to leave home. Before legally changed his name to DotComGuy, this ex-Marine dropped too many hand grenades during throwing practice. DCG is looking for website corporate sponsors to pay his salary and living expenses. He's got an incentive to stay inside ... each month, his $24 starting salary doubles; not a bad total-year salary, if you don't mind trading your father's good name for a moment of fame and a few bucks. DCG promises to review e-commerce websites and offer live video feeds from all areas of his now-empty house. So far, I found that he doesn't spell well and can't punctuate correctly. He's got no interesting journal entries, and no online reviews at all. For a guy with a self-described "extremely high IQ," whatever that means, he's not showing me any reason to come back.

Interesting idea, but the press release makes it sound so ridiculous. http://www.dotcomguy.com/ "At 12:00 p.m. CT on January 1, one man will change the face of e-commerce forever. DotComGuy, a 26-year-old former systems manager, will embark on a Y2K adventure by literally stepping into the Internet and living for one year a project that could be defined as the World Wide Webs version of the Biosphere. His experience will be webcast live by GMV Network via streaming video from the moment he walks into a completely empty, two-bedroom house in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, allowing the public to view every aspect of his daily life."

Extractions: Life sucks, doesn't it? Well, it does if you're the poor shmuck known as DotComGuy. A year ago, he volunteered in a brave, noble experiment in the realms of human... um, OK, a daft publicity stunt. He changed his name to DotComGuy and endeavoured to spend the entire year 2000 confined to his home, interacting with the world only through the Internet; his valiant quest was sponsored by a number of Internet startups, who said they'd pay him US$100,000 if he successfully completed his quest. A year later, he's flat broke, not to mention horribly out of shape from subsisting on ordered-in pizza and saddled with an embarrassingly stupid legal name, Meanwhile, his sponsors have been wiped out by the dot-com bust, so it doesn't look like he'll be seeing that $100K . But not everything is hopeless for our hero; he is reportedly happily in love, and about to get married to a woman he has never seen in real life. dotcomguy stupidity [no comments] The Null Device, being a stream of links and commentary on culture, technology, current events and whatever the author finds interesting. Techdirt: DotComGuy Ditching The DotCom Name In 1999, we wrote about the dotcomguy a guy who legally changed his name to dotcomguy and rounded up a bunch of sponsors who would pay him to live all of http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20040316/1211213.shtml
Extractions: Permalink. In 1999, we wrote about the DotComGuy - a guy who legally changed his name to DotComGuy and rounded up a bunch of sponsors who would pay him to live all of the year 2000 in his house, supported by the internet. He set up a website, and kept everyone up-to-date on how living off the internet worked out. Of course, in 2000, the dot com bubble collapsed, and people got tired of publicity stunts - so after the initial burst of publicity, it didn't hold much interest. When he finally left the house in 2001 he said he was going to change his name back to whatever it was before - but it looks like that didn't happen. Now, however, he claims he's really changing his name back , and will hopefully get it off his driver's license, passport and marriage license. The other odd part of the story, though, is that when we reported on him leaving the house in early 2001, he said he was getting ready to marry someone he met in the DotComGuy chat room. However, this article, says he met his wife online late in 2001 (well after the story came out) - and that she didn't know he was DotComGuy until after they met in person. Leave a Comment..
