    The Animals
    Induction Year: 1994
    Induction Category: Performer
Inductees: Eric Burdon (vocals; born May 11, 1941), Chas Chandler (bass; born December 18, 1938), Alan Price (keyboards; born April 19, 1942), John Steel (drums; born February 4, 1941), Hilton Valentine (guitar; born May 22, 1943) Originally known as the Alan Price Combo, the group changed its name to the Animals when Burdon joined in 1962. In 1963, they performed a monthlong residency (much like the Beatles did) in Hamburg, Germany. They also served as the U.K. backing band for visiting bluesmen, including John Lee Hooker the Beatles Bob Dylan - became an early milestone in the British Invasion. The single was unconventional in both its lyrics (it was about a house of prostitution in New Orleans) and length (it ran for more than four minutes at a time when anything longer three minutes was considered too long for radio). Nonetheless, “House of the Rising Sun” topped the American and British charts. In fact, it stayed at #1 in the U.S. for three weeks – longer than any single since the Beatles ’ “Can’t Buy Me Love” held down the top spot a half-year earlier.

    Amazing Animal Senses
Visible Light Touch Sound Ultraviolet Light Temperature Gravity Infrared Radiation Smells Magnetic Fields Tastes Electric Fields Some animals have developed amazing adaptations to their environments. Many different types of energy exist in the environment, some of which humans cannot detect. Here are some examples of how some animals sense the outside world and the anatomical structures that allow them to do so.
    Ants
    • Can detect small movement through 5 cm of earth.
    • Can see polarized light.

    Bats
    • Can detect warmth of an animal from about 16 cm away using its "nose-leaf".
    • Bats can also find food (insects) up to 18 ft. away and get information about the type of insect using their sense of echolocation.
    • Can hear frequencies between 3,000 and 120,000 Hz.

    Bees
    • Can see light between wavelengths 300 nm and 650 nm.
    • Have chemoreceptors (taste receptors) on their jaws, forelimbs and antennae.
    • Worker honey bees have 5,500 lenses ("ommatidia") in each eye.
    • Worker honey bees have a ring of iron oxide ("magnetite") in their abdomens that may be used to detect magnetic fields. They may use this ability to detect changes in the earth's magnetic field and use it for navigation.
    • Can see polarized light.

The animals vary in size and characteristics. The Arctic has eight nations within it. They are Canada, Denmark (Greenland), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States. It is an area with 2 million people in it and over 50 languages. One reason that it is a very important area is because of how it affects the weather patterns in the northern hemisphere. The arctic land is mainly tundra . This frozen ground is above the tree line and is covered with hearty plants like moss and lichen, which caribou and muskox feed on. The arctic animals are hearty creatures because low temperatures and precipitation with strong winds are not uncommon in the Arctic.
