The value of wood and non-timber products provided by forests is immeasurable. In addition, forests provide environmental services such as regulating water supplies and stemming soil erosion. From April 1 through August 31, it is illegal to possess green or dry roots that have not been certified or do not have certified weight receipts attached. If diggers fail to meet this deadline and do not have their ginseng weighed or they fail to obtain a weight receipt, they cannot legally sell their ginseng and could risk being fined or even jailed.
