If you are interested a career that combines work in the out-of-doors with science, forestry may be just what you are looking for. Foresters are applied ecologists who do hands-on management of forest ecosystems. Their work is done within an ethical framework of sustainable use of forests and of stewardship. Undergraduate and graduate research programs leading to the B.S.F., M.S. or Ph.D. in Forestry are designed to prepare you for professional careers with state and federal agencies, local governments, forest industry, environmental organizations, academic institutions and consulting firms. Of this, 27% is pine, 17% is mixed hardwood and pine, 39% is upland oak-hickory forests, and the remaining 16% are bottomland species including some oak, cypress, cottonwood, and elm. Through shared information, technology, and understanding, we empower others and ourselves to: sustain and enhance functioning forest ecosystems; provide a sustainable supply of forest resources to meet human needs (e.g., material, economic, and social); protect lives and property from wildfires; and provide a dollar return to the permanent school trust. The Division of Forestry exists to provide a long-term, sustainable yield of forest resources from state forest lands; improve the health and productivity of other public and private forest lands (including community forest lands); and protect life, property, and natural resources from wildfires. This is primarily accomplished through three core programs: fire management, state land management, and cooperative forest management. Through the efforts of the Division of Forestry, Minnesota's citizens can rely on

A Bold Approach to Sustainable Forest Management
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist.
SFI program participants practice sustainable forestry on all the lands they manage. They also influence millions of additional acres through the training of loggers and foresters in best management practices and landowner outreach programs.
This unique commitment to sustainable forestry recognizes that all forest landowners, not just SFI program participants, play a critical role in ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of our forests.

    Ecotrust's Forestry Program
    Overview
Conservation-based forestry produces timber while protecting core ecological and social values. Ecotrust is working to develop landscape-scale examples of conservation-based forest management that sustain biodiversity and provide more reliable opportunities for forest-dependent communities.
    Key Objectives
Evaluate impacts and benefits of "business as usual" forestry relative to conservation-based forestry, improve forest management and protection in key watersheds, and encourage forest practices that protect biodiversity and create opportunities for local residents. Originally covering some 25 million hectares, the narrow band of coastal temperate rain forest that runs from Alaska to Northern California has sustained human communities in this region for at least ten millennia. Few places in the world have seen comparably advanced societies arise on a foundation of natural abundance, rather than farming or herding. After a century of forest management practices based upon industrial models, coastal temperate rain forests are contributing ever-diminishing amounts of economic, ecological and social value to our bioregion.

More than 1.6 billion people worldwide depend on forests
for wood and non-timber forest products, such as fruit, nuts,
medicines, and fibers. Forests represent an important natural resource that can help developing countries improve their economic well-being. More than 1.6 billion people worldwide depend on forests for some part of their livelihood. Forests provide a wealth of important wood and non-timber forest products (such as edible nuts and fruits, medicinal plants, fibers and rubber) that people in the developed and developing world rely on. The value of wood and non-timber products provided by forests is immeasurable.
In addition, forests provide environmental services such as regulating water supplies and stemming soil erosion. These services have an enormous impact on worldwide agricultural productivity and human health. Forests play a crucial role as major stores of greenhouse gases, such as carbon. This important function contributes to reducing global warming. Forests also provide important habitat for wildlife. Experts estimate that 70 percent of all land-based plants and animals live in forests.
Unfortunately, forests are being destroyed at unprecedented rates due to unsustainable and illegal logging, agricultural expansion, population pressures, large-scale industrial and infrastructure projects, and national policies that subsidize forest conversion to other uses. Experts estimate that approximately 16 million hectares of natural forest were lost annually during the 1990s (this is almost the size of Washington State, each year). This destruction poses a serious threat to the well being of communities dependent on forests and to global environmental health.

March 31 is Deadline to Weigh and Certify Ginseng Roots
Officials at the Division of Forestry remind all ginseng dealers and diggers that March 31 is the deadline to have the root weighed and certified. From April 1 through August 31, it is illegal to possess green or dry roots that have not been certified or do not have certified weight receipts attached.
If diggers fail to meet this deadline and do not have their ginseng weighed or they fail to obtain a weight receipt, they cannot legally sell their ginseng and could risk being fined or even jailed.
Diggers who need to have ginseng roots weight-receipted can make an appointment to do so at one of the 12 weigh stations maintained by the Division of Forestry. Contact Information for Ginseng Weigh Stations Cabell County, Kyra Johnson, P O Box 189, Milton WV 25541, 304-743-6186
