A Grower's Guide to Using Biological Control for Silverleaf Whitefly on Poinsettias in the Northeast United States The Pest: Silverleaf Whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii Historical Review.
The major foliar pest of poinsettia in northeastern United States greenhouses is the silverleaf whitefly (SLW), Bemisia argentifolii . This insect first became a greenhouse pest in the northeast United States in 1987 when it became more common than the greenhouse whitefly (GHWF) ( Trialeurodes vaporariorum ), the primary whitefly pest of poinsettia at that time. The current problem with SLW began in 1986 when poinsettia growers in Florida experienced devastating outbreaks of what was at first called sweetpotato whitefly (SPWF), Bemisia tabaci . SPWF had been in the United States since 1897. To distinguish this new, damaging form of SPWF, from the pre-existing, less damaging strain, the old strain was referred to as strain A, and the new strain damaging poinsettia, field crops, and vegetables, was called strain B. By 1987-88, strain B had spread to almost every poinsettia growing region in the United States. Work on the biology, morphology, and genetics of strains A and B revealed sufficient difference that strain B was described as a new species of whitefly. Strain B was named

  • Pest problems and definition.
  • Pest - species that irritates or destroys something of value to humans. 200 serious, 450 occassional, 6,000 annoying.
  • May act directly on plant and directly or indirectly on specific product. May be vector of disease. May be only irritation. Must remember that many more species are probably beneficial and many others innocuous. Human contributions to pest problems.
  • Ecosystem simplification and concentration, e.g. monoculture agriculture. 20% of corn crop (largest cash crop) is destroyed. Transportation of pests. Importation of pest, host or both, e.g. Colorado potato beetle, Gypsy moth, European corn borer, Cucumber beetle, African honey bee. Human attitudes and demands. We want perfect products, i.e. fruits, vegetables, etc. How do we legislate control of pests?
  • Quarantines - manditory restriction of importing and exporting. Border inspections. Cheaper than other methods. Eradication - total elimination of pest, very difficult, very expensive. Med-fly.

    Integrated Pest Management Reports
    • The CHB is the principal organization responsible for the development and implementation of integrated pest management programs at the NIH. These programs are designed to meet the specific needs of NIH personnel, research programs, and the facilities. CHB staff also evaluate, oversee, and administer all contracted IPM services at the NIH. Conduct field surveys and pest identifications to provide technical advice, recommendations, and guidance on issues pertaining to the safe and effective control of pests in and around NIH facilities. Review plans, drawings, and specifications for the design, construction or renovation of buildings in order to incorporate integrated pest management concepts and requirements in all NIH occupied facilities. Collaborate with and support other ORS components, and their programs, in areas related to IPM, i.e., animal feed and bedding operations, solid waste management, building and grounds maintenance, housekeeping services, etc.

    Pest Management
The Agricultural Commissioner is charged with the responsibility of managing nuisance pests of agriculture and of human health. By order of the Board of Supervisors, toxic baits are available and sold at cost. We are involved in efforts to control the spread of weed pests such as star thistles and distaff thistle.
    Vine Mealybug (VMB)
    General Information on VMB
VMB is a very serious pest of grape vines that has the potential to cause a significant impact on the wine grape industry. For detailed information regarding the biology of VMB and the damage it can cause go to the UC Vine Mealybug Pest Management Guidelines website. We believe it is critical that growers successfully manage this pest based on the best management practices below. Growers should communicate with their neighbors and winery on an ongoing basis regarding trapping efforts, infestations and pesticide applications directed toward VMB.
    History of VMB
This mealybug was first discovered in California in 1994, and by the end of 2004, VMB had been found in 21 counties in California. VMB was found for the first time in a vineyard in Sonoma County in August 2002. Since that time the insect has been found in numerous locations throughout the county and is spreading.
    VMB Best Management Practices
All growers should trap for VMB in their vineyards beginning in June, and trap through December, or until the first good rain. Growers may either set out their own traps then "read" them to look for male mealybugs that may have been caught, or obtain the services of someone trained and willing to do so.

    Corn Production
    Pest Management
Yield reductions occur every year across Iowa due to weed pressure, insect feeding, or stalk lodging. Many pests can be managed by producers and agronomists during the growing season if fields are regularly scouted and treatments employed when necessary. Achieving high corn yields requires proper attention to pest management to realize the potential yield within an environment. Pest Management and the Environment (PME) Weed Management Weed Management

Posted November 1997 Every fall, many people look forward to the colorful display of trees changing color. Although everyone looks for a "peak" when the colors are at their best, there is a long season for enjoying the colors. From the last week in September through the middle of November, you can find bright red, yellow, and scarlet foliage somewhere in the Carolinas. Folklore has attributed this colorful display to visits from Jack Frost, but a series of chemical processes in the leaves create the palette of colors which we see. These processes are triggered by the shorter periods of daylight as fall approaches, and by the cooler temperatures. The weather of the preceding summer usually has minimal effects on the type of fall colors we have. The only "bad" weather for fall color is an early frost, which can shorten the season. Anyone making travel plans to see the fall colors can begin visiting the higher elevations of the Carolinas in late September. By early October most mountain roads are crowded with cars. Motel rooms become scarce during October, so you need to call ahead if you can. If your travel schedule can be flexible, watch the weather reports for an approaching cold front. After these pass through our area, the haze is cleared away and visibility is ideal. So if you can, keep a bag packed and watch the weather reports for your best leaf-watching trips. And if you have to plan ahead, anytime in October can be a treat as the color changes spread from the mountains to the coast.
