Pest Management Home Commercial Horticulture Pest Management Daylily Rust Control with Biofungicides
Daylily is an economically important nursery crop for Louisiana growers. It was relatively disease-free before the arrival of daylily rust in 2000. Commercial growers and homeowners rely solely on fungicides for rust control, which is expensive and time consuming. Biofungicides are biological or bio-rational alternatives that control disease by different modes of action. If effective, they can reduce control cost and provide resistance management tools.
Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers are on the Move

Periodically, grasshoppers have been of economic importance, but a few species sometimes occur in large enough numbers to damage citrus, vegetable crops and landscape ornamentals. One of the species most commonly causing damage is the eastern lubber grasshopper.

Mosquito Adult Susan Ellis Mosquito Larvae Jim Occi, www.insectimages.org What do they look like? Eggs: Depending on the species of mosquito, eggs can take on many different forms. The main nuisance mosquitoes in Saskatoon are of the genera Aedes (Ochlerotatus) which typically lay single eggs in muddy areas or temporary pools of water. Female mosquitoes of the genera Anopheles, Culiseta, Coquellittidia, and Culex lay floating egg rafts on the surface of an open body of water. Larva: Mosquito larvae are the immature stage of the mosquito life cycle. They spend the duration of this life cycle in standing water found in locations such as ditches, weedy lakes, sloughs/ponds, slow-moving streams, rain and snow-melt pools, woodland pools, marshes, as well as tree holes, and some aquatic plants. They can also be found in artificial habitats such as rain barrels, livestock watering troughs, and old tires. Pupae: The pupal stage is the third stage of the mosquito life cycle. At this stage, they are beginning to metamorphose into adults and no feeding occurs. The soft pupal skin will split when the adult is ready to emerge.

The Proof Is in the Pellet By Kenneth Brower
Photography by Angela Wyant Charlie Ford's sixth graders sat four to a table, each student confronting the riddle of a barn-owl pellet. Working deftly, using straightened paper clips as probes, the students picked the pellets apart. It was forensic science, and they were solving dozens of murders. Outside, the temperature in Clovis, on the outskirts of Fresno in California's great Central Valley, had risen to 102 degrees, but inside Redbank Elementary it was cool, and the kids worked patiently. Now and then came murmurs of appreciation as tablemates showed one another some new prize: a nearly complete gopher skull; a perfect vole jawbone; a hair-thin ulna still attached, miraculously, to its radius. Such attentiveness from sixth graders was eerie. One wall of the classroom was a photo gallery of owls: snowy, barn, screech, great horned, great gray. The facing wall was a gallery of hawks. Birds of prey are infused throughout the curriculum. The students chart the owls' growth rates in math class, write raptor essays in English, focus on the birds in science. Visiting lecturers introduce the students to great horned owls, kestrels, red-tailed hawks, and golden eagles. I asked Ford whether his sixth graders ever failed to catch the raptor bug.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
This is a big buzzword among gardeners and farmers. There are a lot of definitions of IPM out there but here are the basic concepts:
  • Put the right plant in the right place! Improve the cultural conditions. Cultural conditions include water, light, pollution, wind and soil. Some conditions are more controllable than others. See our pages about watering and soil for more info. Know your pest. Choose the least toxic method of pest control. Look at improving cultural conditions first, then try a non-chemical method of control. Often these methods work. Chemicals are a last resort. Know your chemical if you must use one. What specifically does it kill? How do you use it? How long does it stay in the soil or air? What are the risks to you or the environment around you?
