Foreword
The golden apple snail, popularly known as "golden kuhol'' [Pomacea canaliculata Lamarck], is one of the major pest problems in rice production. In 1989, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimated that yield tosses owing to this pest ranged from 1% to 40% of the planted area in the Philippines, resulting in huge production loss. To control this pest, many farmers resort to the massive use of synthetic molluscicides that are expensive and broad spectrum, affecting non-target organisms including human beings.
This primer was prepared to present additional alternatives and information on golden apple snail management. It contains many new information to reduce the misuse of molluscicides. Discussed here are details of the biology of golden apple snail, including several management options that farmers could use to manage this pest in their farms.
A new recipe for golden apple snail is now available. The product is a chicharon (cracker) that is devoid of water, has no offensive odor, with longer shelf-life, and can be readily used as an ingredient in other recipes.

Bollgard II Cotton Integrated Pest Management
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is used to help control pests in cotton. It utilises a combination of biological, physical and chemical controls to maximise the control or suppression of pests. The overall aim is to maintain pest numbers at a low level to minimise economic damage to the crop. No single IPM program is appropriate in all situations, each situation is different and will vary in the techniques used. IPM options may include:
  • Use of beneficial plants such as trap cropping and refuges; Pupae destruction to interrupt the heliothis breeding cycle; Crop rotation; Management of beneficial insects; Physical controls such as traps, collars, barriers; Biological controls; Careful application of pesticides according to label directions.
Bollgard II cotton can be a useful tool in IPM as it allows better management of beneficial insects, reduced insecticide applications and is another option to help control Helicoverpa spp. Select a Country Argentina Australia Belgium Brazil Bulgaria Canada Chile China Colombia Croatia Czech Republic Denmark France Germany Greece Hong Kong Hungary India Indonesia Italy Japan Kenya Korea Malawi Malaysia Mexico Pakistan Philippines Poland Portugal Romania Russian Federation Senegal Singapore Slovakia South Africa Spain Swaziland Taiwan Tanzania Thailand Turkey Uganda Ukraine United Kingdom United States Vietnam Legal Notice

    Pest management
Pests are any organisms, including animals, weeds and diseases, capable of causing unwanted harm to people, the environment or the economy.
Pest management covers actions aimed at avoiding or limiting unwanted harm from established pests.
While pests can present hazards to our health and well being, so too can the toxic practices used to prevent them. If pests are a problem in or around the workplace, it may be possible to manage them without introducing chemicals into and around the workplace, such as toxic pesticides.
If it is not possible to use alternative pest management practices provide pre-notification of pesticide applications. Make alternative work arrangements so employees can avoid the workplace when pesticides are being used. They may be able to work from another location, such as another office or from home, for a temporary period of time.

When a natural disturbance occurs from an event as large as a landslide to as small as a tree falling in a forest it can wreak havoc on the animal, plant and insect populations in that ecosystem. Agricultural landscapes, disturbed regularly by tilling, planting, cultivating and harvesting, can throw the insect world into disarray. Often, such activities kill off beneficial insects that prey on crop pests. The beneficials usually do not rebound as quickly as pests adapted to agricultural disturbances.

Pest Management Plan
The Corporation of Delta has developed a Pest Management Plan (PMP) for mosquito control, No. 700-002-2006/2010, for the purpose of reducing adult mosquito annoyance through the reduction of larval mosquito populations. The PMP has been endorsed by the B.C. Ministry of Environment and is valid from April 2006 through December 2010. The PMP relies on an integrated pest management approach to achieve its goals. The PMP focuses on larval mosquito control initiatives which include public education, physical site modifications and biological controls. The use of non-persistent bacterial larvicides, and the conservation and enhancement of natural mosquito predators wherever possible, are key strategies used in the reduction of larval mosquito populations. Mosquito larvae require stagnant or non-flowing waters to develop, and these may be temporary or permanent water bodies. When physical alterations (eg. draining or filling of potential mosquito breeding areas) are neither practical nor desirable, developing larvae are treated using larvicides. Total area for larvicide treatment will not exceed 100 hectares of public lands in each year of the PMP. Applications of larvicides are made using only ground-based, hand broadcast methods. A link to the electronic version of the PMP is provided below. Pest Management
A comprehensive pest control program is carried out throughout the Shire, but is focused mainly on combating fly breeding at rubbish tip sites, and spraying and baiting of known or potential mosquito breeding areas. Residents can assist in the control of fly breeding by wrapping all food wastes before placing in rubbish bins and by proper storage and use of compost. The Shires Environmental Health Officer can provide information on the control and eradication of pests such as rodents, cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes and stable flies. Contact a pest control company for further information and treatment for infestations on private property.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes will breed where water is allowed to lay or be stored, stagnant water in containers such as pot plant holders can allow mosquito larvae or wrigglers to grow. You are encouraged to eliminate any possible mosquito breeding areas on your own land, any items in the yard that can be removed or relocated so as to prevent the retention of water will assist in the prevention of mosquito breeding. Septic tanks are also a prime breeding area. Mosquito proof cowels are required to be fitted to all vent pipes to prevent direct access by mosquitoes to septic tanks.

Spider Mites
High springtime temperatures have brought early and, in some cases, serious outbreaks of webspinning mites in almond orchards in the warmer regions of the Central Valley. "Mites are a perennial problem in Kern County," observes Mario Viveros, farm advisor. "But this year, a lot of growers are having trouble after just three hot days (in May)." "I saw infestations at bloom this spring," Machado said, which is why he thinks it's a good idea for growers who see mite populations building in their orchards to consider buying and releasing some mite predators. "If you go in with a high label rate application of miticide now, you kill off the predator species as well, which leaves you completely exposed to a subsequent infestation," he said. A rapid increase in pest mite populations can result in defoliation, Viveros says, which creates a serious problem for the grower in the following year. "With defoliation, there're no carbohydrates for next year's crop," he explains. There is no noticeable effect on tree growth and nut sizing in the year the infestation and defoliation occurs, he says, because the annual growth and nut sizing are usually complete by the time mite infestations become serious. The following year, however, nut set, leaf size, terminal growth, and crop size can be much reduced. According to the University of California's manual, IPM for Almonds, the crop can fall off by as much as 20 percent following a serious mite infestation and defoliation in the previous year.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
Integrated pest management (IPM) manages pest populations below levels that cause economic or aesthetic damage levels by balancing biologic cultural, chemical, genetic or other control methods. Control may be aimed at one or more pests depending on the scope and complexity of t management system. IPM takes into account interactions among pests, environment and commodity, as well as social implications of the chosen control strategies. IPM differs from traditional control a approaches where each pest is considered and controlled individually, and where emphasis m be on a single measure The IPM concept comes from the realization that any disruption of a pest tends to affect other pests and beneficials in the urban, range or cropping systems with greater diversity tend to undergo fewer disruptive pest outbreaks. For this reason, it has been easier to develop IPM programs in fairly stable environments, such as tree fruits, forest or alfalfa than in annual crops and gardens that represent more disruptive environments. APPROACH Integrated pest management systems need to be flexible and broad, and several approaches can be taken. One possible approach follows:

    Integrated Pest Management
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a method of managing pest problems and manipulating pest populations. It's often characterized as applied ecology. Three main components of IPM are monitoring, suppression and controls. The idea is to understand the system in which the pests, beneficial organisms and crops exist, and use a careful combination of tactics to maintain the pest population below the level where it causes significant harm (the threshold). The system is monitored regularly to see what is happening. Suppressive measures (rotation, resistant varieties, destruction of crop residues, encouraging natural enemies) are used whenever appropriate. When monitoring indicates a need, direct controls are applied (pesticides, handpicking, biological controls). It is highly unlikely for a pest to evolve resistance to a combined approach, and when the causes of pest outbreaks are understood, they can often be reduced or eliminated before problems arise. When we apply insect controls automatically, without first determining if a problem exists, we may waste resources and effort, kill beneficial organisms, or hasten development of resistance by the pest. When we apply an insecticide, there are benefits as well as costs. Our job is to use these materials responsibly, so we have the tools for years to come, resources aren't wasted, and the environment isn't affected adversely.

What is Integrated Pest Management?
Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, is most often defined as an approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical, and chemical methods of pest control in a way that minimizes pest damage and at the same time reduces the risk to an individual's health and the environment. For structural pest professionals the concept of IPM has been around for several years though seldom used. In spite of this, Public Schools, Hospitals, and Government offices are now requiring the use of IPM practices in their facilities in order to minimize risks to their students, patients, and employees, and today home owners are more aware and more concerned about the products being used in and around their home and family.
Adept Pest Solutions applies an Integrated Pest Management approach to all of its pest control practices. When a technician comes to your home, he or she will perform a free and thorough inspection of your property in order to identify, locate, and determine the cause of your pest problem. Prior to performing any treatment, the technician's findings will be recorded in a complete and thorough customized report detailing where, how, and why the pest problem exists. The need for pest control will then be assessed utilizing Integrated Pest Management Practices, taking into account the efficacy, cost, and safety of your home, family, and the environment. Therefore, if you're looking for a practical, long term solution to your pest problem please give us a call.
