Olive Knot Information Update, July 2003
Thank you to Ian Rowe from the WAOC for the following update. South Australia has reported two possible outbreaks of what looks like olive knot, however, it may be oleander knot, which is apparently common in Australia. Until the results of current investigations by the South Australians are known, we all need to be on our guard (actually, we should be on guard for any pests and diseases at all times!). Suggested Protocol for Harvesting Olive Lace Bug Infested Groves
While it appears that eradication of Olive lace bug from the two South West groves where it was detected in 2002 has been successful, it is important for the industry to recognise that good grove inspection and hygiene and biosecurity measures be employed to minimise the risk of spread of both endemic pests and exotic pests such as Olive lace bug. This suggested protocol for harvesting olives is aimed at stopping the spread of Olive lace bug (OLB) should it become established in WA. The same principles apply to reducing the spread of other pests and diseases between groves which will help to avoid unnecessary use of chemicals and associated costs. The different methods that may be used for harvesting olives requires a general protocol but specific details for the particular equipment used. In many cases, while trees are young, hand harvesting will be the main method used. As trees grow larger, pneumatic rakes and catching mats are likely to be the common method on small groves. In larger groves mechanical equipment such as tree shakers with umbrella type catchers may be the common method used and perhaps modified grape harvesters.

guaranteed results. Our commitment to you starts with our contract, and continues through every service visit our specialist makes to your home.
We understand that the annoyance of pests is reason enough to want to control, without the reminder of the threat that many pests may pose. Read on for further details of some of the primary pests we treat: Ants
Ants are common around homes in Georgia because they feed on and contaminate human food, especially those high in sugars or fat. However, any type of food or food particles can attract and provide food for ants. Ants can pose a health risk and create colonies throughout the structure of your home.
Ants locate food sources by random foraging. A colony sends out scouting ants to find food sources. Once located these scouts carry the food back to the nest. Other workers follow her scent trails back to the food source. Ants will travel great distances to get food and water. The best approach to ant control in the home or business is cleanliness. For situations where cleanliness alone is insufficient, Micron employs the best processes and technology in its treatment programs for controlling ants in your home or business.

Organic Inputs Technology and Management
Kisan Probiotic Pratirodh range for Pest Management in Organic Agriculture Kisan Probiotic Pratirodh consists of pesticidal extracts from plant parts, non chemical and naturally occurring pesticidal materials such as silica, vinegar; soap formulations; diatomaceous earth and many others which increase the effectiveness of botanical extracts. Their effectiveness can be further improved with intercropping, crop diversification, trap crop etc. Rigorous laboratory experiments and field trials over ten years have resulted in the development of these probiotic foliar sprays which harness the predatory and antagonistic characteristics of naturally occurring compounds, through an accelerated process of production. It would be worthwhile to mention here that as these solutions are preventive, the concept of ETL (Economic Threshold Level) coined by chemical pest manufacturing companies to market their products is rendered redundant. Simultaneously with promoting Kisan Probiotic Pratirodh among the farmers, on the cards are plans to improve their efficacy, upgrade extraction methods to enhance their potency, develop the pesticidal ingredients in their pure form for making it available to the farmers alongwith the formulae for their combination into probiotic solutions.

The Department of Education routinely has assisted the Office of Pesticide Services of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services with providing information to public school divisions regarding programs to help school divisions develop Integrated Pest Management Plans. In the past, these activities have included a survey of pest management practices of all school divisions and regional workshops focused on the Integrated Pest Management program. Most school divisions are using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. Assistance is being offered at no cost by American Pest Management, Inc., through the Office of Pesticide Services.

      PEST MANAGEMENT
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the key to sustainable pest control. The objective is to adopt cultural, biological, mechanical, physical or other less-hazardous strategies to minimise the use of pesticides. IPM is therefore the careful consideration of all these available pest control techniques and their subsequent integrated use to improve biological balance. This should discourage the development of pest populations whilst keeping pesticide use and other interventions to economic levels, and will also minimise risks to health and the environment.
