  • An understanding of plant genetics is a prerequisite for plant breeding and to develop a sustainable approach to agriculture. SCRIs work in plant genetics is conducted by the Genome Dynamics programme. ) Reviewed by Robert Chambers (7/1998) The field of plant genetics is growing steadily and people with even just a general interest in horticulture see small but increasing reference to it. An excellent bibliography of the literature on plant genetics is included.

In this third and final report of The Keystone International Dialogue Series on Plant Genetic Resources, the participants from the Olso Plenary session agreed on the need to alert the international community to the threat of genetic erosion. They outlined a recommended structure for the Global Initiative.
The participants urged action as plant genetic resources provide the basic raw materials to make crops adaptable to: expanding biotic and abiotic stresses, changing consumer preferences; and possible changes in the environment, as may occur through global warming, rising sea levels, depletion of the ozone layer, and a growing world human population. While basic institutional frameworks are in place at different governmental levels, the system remains inadequate and underfunded. Gaps to be addressed included:
  • Ex situ conservation, including collecting, storage and regeneration, documentation and information systems, germplasm evaluation and enhancement, and exchange;

PLANT GENETICS
Prof. Mirella Sari Gorla, Dr. Carla Frova, Dr. Luca Gianfranceschi. The main field of interest of the group is the study of fitness components in higher plants, including the genetic basis of plant adaptability to environmental stresses, the genetic control of sexual plant reproduction and the molecular basis of heterosis. The researchers involved have specific expertises in different areas: genetics, biometrical genetics, molecular biology and bioinformatics. Competences of the group on the above-mentioned research areas are well documented by a large scientific production on international journals. Research topics: Stress tolerance 1.1 Water stress Sari Gorla, Frova, Pè, Marino, Maharajah. Herbicides Sari Gorla, Frova. The use of environmentally friendly herbicides is often hindered by their negative effects on the development and productivity of non tolerant crops. With the final goal to breed crop varieties tolerant to “good” herbicides, we have undertaken a comprehensive characterization of an enzyme superfamily, the glutathione transferases (GSTs), putatively involved in the metabolic detoxification of these molecules. In the recent past we have isolated and cloned in silico the whole rice GST gene family, that includes approximatively 60 genes belonging to 6 distinct classes. Currently, the role of each one in the response to thiocarbammates and chloroacetanilides, two important and widely used herbicide classes, is being investigated by quantitative RNA profiling.

Almond genomics and gene discovery
Almond ( Prunus dulcis ) is a nut tree species which belongs to the Rosaceae family and is closely related to peach, apricot, cherry and plum. The world wide almond industry has expanded rapidly in recent years and continues to expand. The majority of almond trees are planted in Mediterranean climactic regions. In Australia, the almond industry has great potential to expand, as Australian almond production only accounts for 1-2 % of world almond supply. Australian almond production in 2007 totalled 25,000 tonnes (kernel), being a 65% increase over 2006, and nearly 3 times of the production in 2000 (8558 tonnes).
To facilitate Australian and International almond breeding programs, we focus on the following research areas.

Cano GMO Chip Array-On is introducing the Cano GMO Chip This microarray, in Area SNP Chip design , for the analytics of rapeseed products carries all necessary features for reliable transgene detection and characterisation. All tests are in compliance with VDLUFA and LAG standards. Along with pat, bar, epsps, nptII, tNos and monitoring additional features are the detection of sample impurities caused by traces of maize and soybean and discrimination of natural CaMV infection from 35S transformation . There's a multiplex chip available. This implies one chip will suffice for analysis of 10 genes in 6 different samples A species-specific probe for the confirmation of rapeseed DNA in the sample is a matter of course. Fast and safely validated results are achieved in just one day by the application of three different methods that are combined in one protocol (PCR, hybridisation and primer extension). Cano GMO Chip applications are:
  • ecological monitoring
  • food safety surveys
  • feed analytics
  • seed testing
  • audits for processed plant materials
The CanoGMO Chip has been developed in cooperation with TU-München-Weihenstephan, Centre of Life and Food Sciences, Department of Plant Science, Chair of Plant Breeding.
