Improving Soils for Vegetable Gardening
HYG-1602-92
Marianne Riofrio
E.C. Wittmeyer
Vegetable plants grow best in a fertile, well-drained soil of loamy texture. Sandy loam soils, well-supplied with organic matter, are easily worked and are quite productive. Unfortunately, many gardens do not contain such soils. Very coarse, sandy soils dry out rapidly and are difficult to maintain at a high level of fertility. Clay soils are hard to work and usually remain wet until late in the spring. These soils are often yellow or dark brown and sticky when wet; or grayish in color where drainage is poor. Clay soils tend to form a hard crust after a heavy rain and become so compacted that the plant's root system is deprived of essential oxygen required for growth. Clay and sandy soils must be modified for successful vegetable gardening.
Basic Considerations
To obtain a desirable soil for gardening, consider the following areas of concern: water drainage, moisture condition at the time of working, erosion, texture and structure, fertility, and pH (acidity or alkalinity).
Water Drainage
Satisfactory vegetable production cannot be expected on poorly-drained soils. Where drainage problems exist, and where an outlet is available, four-inch drain tile in lines 25 feet apart is suggested. The tile should be at least 2 feet deep. The fall in the lines will depend on the outlet and length of lines, but water needs a fall of at least 2 inches per 100 feet of line.

Wisconsin Soils Program
Soil Survey work in Wisconsin began in the early 1900s shortly after the inception of the National Cooperative Soil Survey . On May 14, 2006, over 100 years of Wisconsin soil survey work was completed when the digital soils data for Iron County, Wisconsin was posted to the Soil Data Mart bringing digital soils coverage for Wisconsin to 100%. This accomplishment could not have been achieved without the National Cooperative Soil Survey program, which in Wisconsin is a joint effort of the NRCS and other federal, state, and local agencies. Principal state cooperators include the University of Wisconsin-

Natural Your Care Visit the Natural Yard Care site to learn how to put nature to work in your yard. Unlike the air we breathe or the water we drink, soil is often overlooked as an essential element in a balanced, sustainable environment. But healthy soil is critical for good air and water quality and the health of our lawns and gardens. In the Pacific Northwest, the top layer of soil is thin. And in many yards, construction and years of neglect have removed any trace of healthy soil, leaving only poor soil behind. Learn how you can improve your soil and how composting can restore soil to make plants grow and yards healthy.

Soils for Containers and Bonsai
by Brent Walston
Introduction
Soils for container growing, and that includes bonsai, are very different from soils used in gardens and field growing. In the following article I will discuss the necessary parameters for container soils and how to use them to develop good container mixes.
Soil Basics
The study of soils is centered on the size and composition of the particles. Particle size varies directly with air retention, and inversely with water retention. This means that, as the particle size decreases, so does the amount of air retained at the saturation point. It also means that, as the particle size decreases, the amount of water retained increases We all know this intuitively and actually work with this principle all the time in the garden. Clay soils retain more water and less air than sandy soils. Interestingly, we often use the same cure for both extremes, the introduction of organic matter. Organic matter is very good at water retention. Soil amendments, such as peat moss can hold many times their weight in water. It is obvious that this would help a sandy soil, but how does it help a clay soil? As long as the organic matter particle size is not too small, and the amendment is thoroughly incorporated, clay soils are improved by 'aggregation'. That is, the inorganic and the organic soil particles tend to clump together to form larger aggregate particles that will trap air between them as well as water within them. This improves the aeration, or air retention of the soil. Stated differently, it improves the drainage.

    39. Tropical Soils Impede Landmine Detection
Feb 9, 2008 Use of a metal detector is the most common technique when searching for landmines, which litter the soil in approximately 90 countries

    Tropical Soils Impede Landmine Detection
ScienceDaily (Feb. 9, 2008) See also: Magnetic properties of soils are caused by ferrimagnetic minerals, such as magnetite and maghemite. The negative effects can result in a reduction of detector sensitivity or cause false alarms. To overcome these problems, the metal detectors have been continuously re-hauled over the years but only now has the geoscientific research of the soil been taken into account. The knowledge of soil magnetic properties may allow detectors to be adapted to meet the local conditions. Geoscientists at the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geosciences and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources in Hannover, Germany conducted a study on the magnetic susceptibility of tropical soils using the soil archive of the Federal Agency. The magnetic susceptibility of more than 500 soil samples from the entire tropical belt was analyzed with the goal of classifying their impact on landmine detection. The study revealed that the problem of soil influence can occur quite frequently. More than one-third of the measured soil samples may generate severe or very severe limitations when using metal detectors. Soils were grouped according to their parent rocks. On average susceptibility of soils with basaltic origin were higher than those of other origin. However, the variability within the different groups is high. This provides evidence that besides origin additional influences on soil susceptibility such as soil development are likely to exist.
