Z Albert Bierstadt Biography Albert Bierstadt (January 7, 1830-February 19, 1902) was a United States painter who followed the westward expansion. He is best known for his large, detailed landscape paintings. Albert Bierstadt was born in Germany. His family moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1833. He studied painting in Düsseldorf, Germany from 1853 to 1857. He taught drawing and painting briefly before devoting himself to painting. Bierstadt was part of the Hudson River School, not an institution but rather an informal group of like-minded painters. The Hudson River School style involved carefully detailed paintings with romantic, almost glowing lighting, sometimes called luminism. Bierstadt began making paintings in New England and upstate New York. In 1859, he traveled westward in the company of a land surveyor the U.S. government, returning with sketches that would result in numerous finished paintings. He continued to visit the American West throughout his career. Though his paintings sold for princely sums, Bierstadt was not held in particularly high esteem by critics of his day. His use of uncommonly large canvases was thought to be an egotistical indulgence, as his paintings would invariably dwarf those of his contemporaries when they were displayed together. The romanticism evident in his choices of subject and in his use of light was felt to be excessive by contemporary critics, a charge that continues to be leveled by many of today's art historians.

He studied (1853- 57) oil painting in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Rome and thereafter worked chiefly in New York City. His vast, majestic, studio panoramas of the Rocky Mountains, more realistic than the landscapes of the earlier Hudson River School, were based on sketches from nature. Many were the result of his trip to the West with a surveying team in 1859. His artworks, popular in their day and now the subject of revived interest, include Rocky Mountains (1863) and Merced River, Yosemite Valley (1866), both in the Metropolitan Museum, New York City. Contact Us FAQ Artist Biography Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), American When Bierstadt was about three years old, his family moved from Germany to New Bedford, Massachusetts. He returned to Dusseldorf, Germany between 1853 and 1857 to study painting. On his return to the United States, he organized an exhibition in New Bedford of 150 paintings, including works of all the major artists of his day. In December, 1857 the Boston Athenaeum bought one of his works, The Portico of Octavia Rome, thus assuring his career. B ierstadt always loved mountains, and he visited the White Mountains before he left for Düsseldorf, for his signature appears in the register on top of Mount Washington on August 11, 1852. He returned at various times from 1858 to 1886. Sometime in 1859 or 1860, Bierstadt visited New Hampshire with his brother, Edward, working in the then new medium of photography. He stayed at the Conway House in Conway, listing himself as "A. Bierstadt , New York," on September 13, 1862. He also spent considerable time at the Glen House in 1869 while at work on Emerald Pool, which he considered his finest work.

Clerin "Zumi" Zumwalt Estes Park People Albert Bierstadt Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), German-born, was one of America's top landscape artists when the Earl of Dunraven brought him to Estes Park in December of 1876, the artist returning the summer of the next year. For his Estes Park Hotel, the Earl wanted the best view possible, and for some reason he needed to bring this painter out to Estes to tell him where it was. Dunraven's right hand man, Theodore Whyte drove Bierstadt around the area. Ultimately, the artist picked a spot not far from where the Estes family then the Griff Evans and then even Dunraven's ranch itself stood, along Fish Creek just a little south from today's Highway 36 and Lake Estes. Once he had returned to his studio in Philadelphia, Bierstadt painted a large oil painting of Longs Peak, for which the Earl was reported to have paid $15,000. The painting was shipped to Ireland where it hung in Dunraven's Glin Castle, in the county of Limerick. The painting, Long's Peak, Estes Park, Colorado, is on a 5 by 8 foot canvas. Bierstadt wrote on October 9, 1877 that the painting was nearly finished. It was displayed in Boston for a while, retouched in Bierstadt's New York studio in February, 1878, then shipped to London, where it was exhibited at the Royal Academy before being taken on to Glin Castle. The painting now resides in the Denver Public Library's Western Room.
