Contact Us FAQ Artist Biography Jules Breton (1827-1906), French After the early death of his mother, Jules Breton and his three siblings were mainly raised by their father, who worked as a supervisor of the lands of the duke of Duras. The Belgian painter Félix de Vigne (1806-1862) convinced the young man to study with him, and Breton moved to Gent in 1843 where he attended the Royal Academy. In 1846 he was in Antwerp working briefly at the academy and spending much of his time studying the Flemish masters. Poor health in 1847 forced him to return to Courrières, but later that year he left for Paris to study with Michel-Martin Drolling (1786-1851), a pupil of David (q.v.). While living in Paris, Breton befriended artists such as Bonvin (q.v.) and Henner (q.v.). During the February Revolution of 1848, which ended the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe, Breton sided with the liberal republicans. His father's untimely death that same year left him and his family in Courrières almost destitute. At the 1849 Salon he exhibited Misery and Despair (destroyed), followed by Hunger (destroyed) at the Salon of 1850-51. These paintings reveal his preoccupation with his own financial struggle and social injustice in general.

PDA cleveroc Mar 25, 2007, 01:06 AM I have a 12" x 16" hand-colored litho (very old...in family since I was very young) Bottom left corner says 2456 The Song of the Lark, right hand corner Made in U.S.A. Back of frame says "Lot #11", assuming it was in auction or something. I carefully took print out of dirty frame under the glass and the print is obviously very old, the back is yellowed and the paper is semi-fragile. Does anyone know what lithographer would have reproduced this Jules Breton work? This print is more of a blown up version of the original work, in that the legs of the peasant girl are not shown. It is quite beautiful, and the inks are vibrant. Any idea what this may be worth? Thanks.

Nox Oculis Jules Breton Jules Breton est né le 1 er mai 1827, dans une région rurale dans le nord-ouest de la France. Sa famille fait partie de la bourgeoisie montante. Son père, Marie-Louis Breton, était maire de Courrières, un petit village du Pas-de-Calas. Il fit reçut sa première formation artistiques, non loin de son village natal, au Collège Saint-Bertin, près de Saint-Omer, puis du Collège Royal de Douai. En 1842, il fit la connaissance du peintre Félix de Vigne (1806-1862), qui fut si impressionné par son jeune talent, qu'il persuada la famille de lui laisser étudier les arts. En 1843, Breton quitta son foyer pour Gand, en Belgique, où il continua ses études artistiques à l'Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Vigne, sous la direction du peintrre Hendrik Van der Haert (1790-1846). En 1846, Breton déménagea à Anvers, où il prit des leçons du Baron Gustaf Wappers ; il s'occupa également à faire des copies des maîtres flamands. Formé comme peintre académique, Breton était néanmoins sensible aux autres tendances en peinture, notamment le rôle de la peinture de genre. En 1847, Breton quitta finalement pour Paris où il espérait parfaire sa formation artistique à l'École des Beaux-Arts. À Paris, il étudia à l'atelier du peintre de genre Michel-Martin Drolling (1786- 1851). Il rencontra, et dévint ami avec plusieurs peintres réalistes (François Bonvin, 1817-1887 et Gustave Brion, 1824-1877).
