Paul Cezanne: a biography....
(b. Jan. 19, 1839, Aix-en-Provence d. Oct. 22, 1906, Aix-en-Provence) P aul Cézanne, the son of a wealthy banker, grew up with Emile Zola, the famous novelist. Cezanne, a highly nervous and inhibited boy, developed artistic interests at an early age, much to the dismay of his father. In 1862, after a number of family disputes, he was given a small allowance and sent to study art in Paris, where Zola had already gone. There he was introduced to the famed circle of artists who met at the Café Guerbois, which included Manet Degas and Pisarro, but his shyness prevented him from becoming an intimate. The group was the 'new wave' in art, and produced realistic work whose style and subject matter shocked many of their contemporaries. Cezanne especially admired the romantic painter Delacroix and, among the younger masters, Courbet and Manet Many of Cezanne's early works were darkly tonal, but he gradually came to portray contemporary life. He was greatly influenced by Camille Pisarro, who befriended him and introduced him to the new impressionist technique of portraying light. Pisarro, like

He returns to Aix to work in his father's bank, but leaves again one year later for Paris where he re-registered at the Academy Suisse. French painter, often called the father of modern art, who strove to develop an ideal synthesis of naturalistic representation, personal expression, and abstract pictorial order.
EARLY LIFE AND WORK
INFLUENCE OF THE IMPRESSIONISTS
RETURN TO AIX-EN-PROVENCE
He seemed to be reintroducing a formal structure that the impressionists had abandoned, without sacrificing the sense of brilliant illumination they had achieved. Cézanne himself spoke of "modulating" with color rather than "modeling" with dark and light. By this he meant that he would replace an artificial convention of representation (modeling) with a more expressive system (modulating) that was closer still to nature, or, as the artist himself said, "parallel to nature." For Cézanne, the answer to all the technical problems of impressionism lay in a use of color both more orderly and more expressive than that of his fellow impressionists.
During his last years many younger artists traveled to Aix-en-Provence to observe him at work and to receive any words of wisdom he might offer. Both his style and his theory remained mysterious and cryptic; he seemed to some a naive primitive, while to others he was a sophisticated master of technical procedure. The intensity of his color, coupled with the apparent rigor of his compositional organization, signaled to most that, despite the artist's own frequent despair, he had synthesized the basic expressive and representational elements of painting in a highly original manner.

"Road at Chantilly" by Paul Cézanne

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: two roads diverged in a wood, and I

After studying law for two years he was encouraged by his childhood friend Emile Zola to settle in Paris. His view that nature should be painted in the forms of the cone, cube and cylinder and Cezanne’s distortion of perspective strongly influenced the development of Cubism. Living mainly in Provence, Cezanne painted portraits, still lifes, landscapes of Mont St Victoire and L’Estaque and a series of ‘Bathers.’ The Impressionists Leisure Painter magazine 'a comprehensive ... Paul Cezanne Biography
Cezanne was born in the French town of Aix-en-Provence, January 19, 1839. His boyhood companion was Emile Zola, who later gained fame as a novelist. Cezanne developed artistic interests at an early age, much to the dismay of his father, a wealthy banker. In 1862, after a number of bitter family disputes, the aspiring artist was given a small allowance and sent to study art in Paris where he was drawn to the more radical elements of the Parisian art world. One of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists, whose works and ideas were influential in the aesthetic development of many 20th-century artists and especially Cubist painters. Cezanne's oil paintings, misunderstood and discredited by the public during most of his life, grew out of Impressionism and eventually challenged all the conventional values of painting in the 19th century because of his insistence on personal expression and on the integrity of the painting itself, regardless of subject matter. Cezanne is now recognized as the most significant precursor of 20th-century formal abstraction in painting, as he developed a purely pictorial language that balanced analysis with emotion and structure with lyricism.
