Seed Newsvine FRA ANGELICO: THE VIEW FROM WITHIN Staff Report NEW YORK, 1 NOVEMBER 2005 —In 1984, Fra Angelico was beatified —the first step in the process toward sainthood—by Pope John Paul II, who also decreed him the patron of artists. Small wonder when one contemplates the exquisite and deeply moving wooden altar panels by the Dominican friar on view until 29 January 2006 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. And while much of Angelico's enduring popularity rests on his frescoes—especially those painted in the dormitory cells at the convent of San Marco in Florence and in the Chapel of Pope Nicholas V in the Vatican—and on altarpieces too large or too fragile to be safely transported, the nearly complete selection of his works of smaller scale on display manage to give some idea of the entire range of the development of his genius over the full course of his career. Born in the countryside north of Florence, Guido di Pietro was already an established artist when he joined the Dominican order sometime between 1419 and 1422, taking for himself the name Fra Giovanni. He received commissions for important altarpieces from his own monastery San Domenico in Fiesole, from other Dominican houses in Florence, Cortona, and Perugia, and from religious institutions as far away as Brescia in the north of Italy and Orvieto and Rome to the south.

home features giftpeople Bd. Fra Angelico Dominican Artist (1395?-1455) by Robert Ellsberg Legend tells us that Fra Angelico never took up his brush to paint without first making a prayer. To behold the luminosity of his work convinces us this must be true and further, that the act of painting itself was prayer. He hoped in his works to evoke feelings of devotion to God in all who saw them. Now, as we move ahead into this new year, can we answer the call to bring Fra Angelico's mystical vision to all aspects of our lives: to the things we make, the activities we undertake, the relationships we share? As Rainer Maria Rilke wrote, "Already in the taking up of the tool there is prayerfulness." Linda Fisher Fra Angelico was one of the great early precursors of the Florentine Renaissance. His frescos and paintings featured vivid color, startlingly lifelike portraits, an ingenious use of perspective, and realistic backgrounds. But for all their stunning beauty and technical virtuosity, the artist's primary end was not the aesthetic but the religious impact of his work. What makes his painting religious is not the subject matter but their intended purpose in exciting the viewer to feelings of religious devotion. In one picture of the crucifixion St. Dominic himself kneels at the foot of the cross, his eyes fixed in grief-stricken adoration of the Holy Wounds. Likewise, in a painting of the heavenly Coronation of the Virgin, the scene is embraced by a cloud of holy witnesses, all kneeling with arms raised in an attitude of prayer. In a particularly haunting depiction of the mocking of Christ, the blindfolded Savior is beset by a swarm of disembodied hands, while in the foreground sit the Blessed Mother, lost in private meditation, and St. Dominic, contemplating an open book in his lap.

His early training in miniature and illumination had its influence in his more important works, with their robes of golden embroidery, their decorative arrangements and details, and pure, brilliant colours. As for the early studies in art of Fra Angelico, nothing is known. His painting shows the influence of the Siennese school, and it is thought he may have studied under Gherardo, Starnina, or Lorenzo Monaco. On account of the struggle for the pontifical throne between Gregory XII Benedict XIII , and Alexander V , Fra Giovanni and his brother, being adherents of the first named, had in 1409 to leave Fiesole, taking refuge in the convent of their order established at Foligno in Umbria. The pest devastating that place in 1414, the brothers went to Cortona, where they spent four years and then returned to Fiesole. There Fra Angelico remained for sixteen years. He was then invited to Florence to decorate the new Convent of San Marco which had just been allotted to his order, and of which Cosmo de' Medici was a munificent patron. At Cortona are found some of his best pictures. It was at Florence, however, where he spent nine years, that he painted his most important works. In 1445, Pope Eugenius IV invited Fra Angelico to Rome and gave him work to do in the Vatican, where he painted for him and for his successor

Fra Angelico (c. February 18 ), was an Early Italian Renaissance painter. Giorgio Vasari, who wrote the Lives of the Artists said he had "a rare and perfect talent". Fra Angelico has been known by many different names. When he was born, he was called Guido di Pietro . People who knew him when he was older called him Fra Giovanni da Fiesole (Brother John from Fiesole). When Giorgio Vasari wrote about him in Lives of the Artists , in the 1500s, he was already known as Fra Giovanni Angelico (Brother Giovanni who is like an Angel). Nowadays, the Italians usually call him il Beato Angelico (the Blessed Angelico). He has been called this for a long time, because he was thought to be specially blessed by God who gave him the talent of painting, and also because he was such a good and holy man. Nowadays this name is official because in 1982 Pope John Paul II "conferred beatification" which means that he is now on the way to being made a saint Vasari says about him: "It is impossible to think of enough good things to say about this holy father, who was so humble and modest in everything that he did and said, and whose pictures were painted with such cleverness and holy faith.
