Pintor del neoclasicismo ingl©s considerado como uno de los grandes maestros del retrato y del paisaje. Biograf­a Desde temprana edad mostr³ habilidades art­sticas y a los quince a±os fue a estudiar dibujo y grabado a Londres con el grabador franc©s Hubert Fran§ois Gravelot. M¡s tarde estudi³ pintura con Francis Hayman, pintor de temas hist³ricos. A trav©s de Gravelot, que hab­a sido disc­pulo del gran pintor franc©s Antoine Watteau, recibi³ la influencia de este ºltimo y, m¡s adelante, tambi©n la de artistas de la escuela flamenca y del pintor holand©s Anthony van Dyck. Entre 1745 y 1760 vivi³ y trabaj³ en Ipswich. Entre 1760 y 1774 vivi³ en Bath, donde pint³ numerosos retratos y paisajes. En 1768 fue elegido miembro de la Royal Academy of Arts y en 1774 el rey Jorge III le invit³ a pintar su retrato y el de la reina consorte, Carlota Sof­a. Ese mismo a±o fij³ su residencia en Londres. Fue el pintor favorito de la aristocracia brit¡nica y logr³ una gran fortuna con sus retratos.
