Frida Kahlo
[Mexican Painter, 1907-1954]
Third wife of Diego Rivera Mexican artists women artists
Born July 6, 1907 in the town of Coyoacán in Mexico, Frida Kahlo survived many difficult events in her life, including contracting polio as a child, a long recovery from a serious car accident, two failed marriages, and several miscarriages.
She used these experiences, combined with strong Mexican and Native American cultural influences, to create highly personal paintings. Kahlo used personal symbolism mixed with Surrealism to express her suffering through her work. A viewer might classify her paintings as Surrealism or Magic Realism, but she considered her art to be realistic.
Kahlo died July 13, 1954 of pulmonary embolism.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Frida Kahlo Biography Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907 - July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter.
Kahlo was born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón in her parents' house in Coyoacán, which at the time was a small town on the outskirts of Mexico City. Her father was a painter and photographer of German-Jewish background, whose family originated from Oradea, Romania.
Following a crippling traffic accident in 1925, Kahlo turned her attention from a medical career to painting. Drawing on her personal experiences, her works are often shocking in their stark portrayal of pain and the harsh lives of women. Fifty-five of her 143 paintings are self-portraits that incorporate personal symbolism complete with graphic anatomical references. She was also influenced by indigenous Mexican culture, aspects of which she portrayed in bright colors, with a mixture of realism and symbolism.
Her paintings attracted the attention of the artist Diego Rivera, whom she later married, divorced, and re-married. An active Communist supporter, she allegedly had an affair with Leon Trotsky, who was assassinated by agents of Stalin in Mexico City in 1940.
Although Kahlo's work is sometimes classified as surrealist and she did exhibit several times with European surrealists, she disputed the label. Her preoccupation with female themes and the figurative candor with which she expressed them made her something of a feminist cult figure in the last decades of the 20th century.

Kahlo, Frida
Kahlo, Frida
Mexican painter, born in Coyoacan near Mexico City, daughter of a German Jewish immigrant and a Mexican. In childhood Frida Kahlo suffered polio, which affected her right leg. At 18 she was gravely injured in a bus accident; from then on, throughout her life, she had frequent operations, was almost permanently in pain, often bedridden or in a wheelchair, and took drugs as well as drink. Recuperating in 1925 she began to paint.
Frida Kahlo had met Diego Rivera when he was painting a mural at her school; in 1929 she married him and though their married life swung between passion and conflict, divorcing and re-marrying, they remained emotionally dependent on each other.
By the late 1930s, Kahlo was part of the international art world, largely through the Surrealist interest in her work. Most of her oil paintings are portraits, many of them self-portraits accompanied by symbolic objects that speak of her loves and pains. Still Lifes too, often representing flowers and fruits, symbolize her joys and sufferings.

Kahlo, Frida Kahlo, Frida (1907-1954), Mexican painter, who produced mostly small, highly personal self-portraits using fantasy and a style inspired by native popular art. Kahlo was born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calder³n in Coyoac¡n, Mexico, near Mexico City. While a student at Mexico City's National Preparatory School in 1925, she sustained severe injuries in a bus accident. During her recuperation, Kahlo taught herself to paint. After three years she took some of her first paintings to Diego Rivera, who encouraged her to continue her work. Kahlo and Rivera married in 1929. Influenced by Rivera's work, Kahlo adopted his use of broad, simplified areas of colour and a deliberately naive style in her paintings. Like Rivera, she wanted her paintings to affirm her Mexican identity, and she frequently used technical devices and subject matter from Ancient Mexican civilizations and folk art. The impact of her work is enhanced by techniques such as the inclusion of fantastic elements, a free use of space, and the juxtaposition of incongruous objects.

Kahlo, Frida Biography
Mexican oil painter, who produced mostly small, highly personal self-portraits using elements of fantasy and a style inspired by native popular art. Kahlo was born in Coyoacun, Mexico, near Mexico City. While a student at Mexico City's National Preparatory School in 1925, she sustained severe injuries in a bus accident. During her recuperation, Kahlo taught herself to paint. After three years she took some of her first oil paintings to the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, who encouraged her to continue her work. Kahlo and Rivera married in 1929.
Influenced by Rivera's work, Frida Kahlo adopted his use of broad, simplified color areas and a deliberately naive style in her oil paintings. Like Rivera, she wanted her oil paintings to affirm her Mexican identity, and she frequently used subject matter from Mexican archaeology and folk art.
Frida Kahlo primarily depicted her personal experience. She frequently focused on the painful aspects of her life, using graphic imagery to convey her meaning. The turbulence of her marriage is shown in the weeping and physically injured self-portraits she painted when she felt rejected by Rivera. She portrayed her physical disintegration, the result of the bus accident, in such works as The Broken Column (1944, Collection of Dolores Olmedo Foundation, Mexico City), in which she wears a metal brace and her body is open to reveal a broken column in place of her spine.
Kahlo had three exhibitions during her lifetime. The exhibitions in New York City in 1938 and in Paris in 1939 were organized through her contact with the French surrealist poet and essayist Andre Breton. In 1953 she had her first exhibition in Mexico, at an art gallery in Mexico City.
