"The Dinky Bird" from "Poems of Childhood", 1904Born as Frederick Parrish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began drawing for his own amusement from early on and, meeting with parental encouragement, acquired an artistic education and went on to pursue a career that was to last for many decades and effectively shape the Golden Age of illustration, and the future of American visual art in general.
Launched by a commission3 to illustrate Kenneth Grahame's The Walls Were as of Jasper in 1897, his repertoire was to include many prestigious projects such as Eugene Field's Poems of Childhood (1904, see illustration) and the traditional1 Arabian Nights (1909).
In the 1920s, Parrish turned away from illustration and concentrated mainly on painting for its own sake. Androgynous nudes in fantastical settings were an often recurring theme. He continued in this venue for the rest of his life, living comfortably off the royalties brought in by the production of posters and calendars featuring his works.
Parrish was famous for the dazzlingly luminous colors that marked much of his artwork; the shade "Parrish blue" was coined in acknowledgement. He achieved this result by means of a special technique involving several coats of oil and varnish applied to his paintings.

Parrish, Maxfield
Parrish, Maxfield Biography
Maxfield Parrish has long been considered one of the greatest American illustrators of the 20th century and lived and worked throughout his career in Cornish Hills, New Hampshire. In the early 1920s, when his works Garden of Allah and Daybreak were reproduced as art prints, he quickly became one of the best known artists in America. His unmistakable paintings - characterized by 'Parrish Blue' water and skies, luminescent rocks and hills, and exquisite young women draped in flowing, classically inspired garments - are infused with a romantic Eden-like quality so entrancing that today's reproductions elicit the same infectious enthusiasm as when the prints first appeared.
In the 1920s, one out of four American homes had his world of make-believe hanging on their walls. A survey taken in 1925 in America showed that Van Gogh, Cezanne and Maxfield Parrish were thought to be the three greatest artists of all time and Parrish's art images on posters, calendars, magazine covers and book illustrations have made his name a household word thereafter.
Today, Maxfield Parrish's art works are in the collections of many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard, and his artwork is once again experiencing an enthusiastic revival. Maxfield Parrish's oil painting Daybreak, one of the most reproduced art images in history, recently sold for $4.3 million, setting a record price for an illustration and Maxfield Parrish art prints rank among the most popular in the world and are distributed in 42 countries.

( Philadelphia, 1870 – New Hampshire, 1966) Pintor americano. Insight and inspiration for your artistic career.
Dear Artist,
Economist of the University of Chicago has published several books and countless papers on the genesis of creativity. Odd business for an economist, you might say, but his research is largely based on exhaustive research into the number of times certain works of art are published in art books, mentioned by critics, or have achieved high prices at auctions. His conclusions include the startling finding that some of the great artists peak early, while others don't do their best till later on. We are of two main types, he says. Some are quick and dramatic, what he calls conceptual innovators. Others are slow and plodding, what he calls experimental innovators. is of the first type, producing his best and most important work before the age of thirty. is of the la ttersteady growth and refinement until his best work comes late in life.
This is, of course, like reinventing the wheeleven if it has a few flat sides. Basing creative greatness on the vagaries of fashionable criticism, publication frequency, or even prices achieved, is so loaded with potholes that it's hardly worth driving there. What to do with , who died in 1912 one of the highest paid painters of all time, but who now hardly appears on the radar. Or

Lazy Danny 07-15-2003, 03:53 AM Maxfield Parrish was a wonderful artist. Frederick Parrish (he would adopt the name Maxfield later) was born in Philadelphia in 1870 ,was the most popular American artist /illustrator from about 1900 until the late 1930's. He continued painting until he was about 90 years old and died at age 96. There is even a The Maxfield Parrish 34 cent commemorative postage stamp. There are several web sights on him. Crane's Chocolate Company T his poster stamp, designed by Maxfield Parrish, has sometimes been referred to as the "Holy Grail" for poster stamp collectors.
S ometime between 1910 and 1915 Clarence Crane commissioned Parrish to create a design that could be used on a label for small gift or sample boxes of chocolates. This poster stamp is the initial result of that commission. Most of the stamps were affixed to the chocolate boxes, and were subsequently disposed of or destroyed, but a very few have survived to find their way into the hands of a few lucky collectors. Mr. Crane was reportedly very pleased with the result, and Parrish slightly reworked the design for use as an actual box label for Crane's Chocolates. Parrish also did two other illustrations for use as labels for boxes of Crane's Chocolates.
T his example was discovered in 2003 mounted in a circa 1915 poster stamp album created by the Maurice L. Rothschild Clothing Company. There is a small surface scrape in the lower left corner of the stamp, affecting a small portion of the design border, but otherwise the stamp is in excellent condition, and still has most of its gum intact. This example appears to be a lower marginal copy. The image size of the stamp measures 44 x 64 mm.
