The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Fine art as “art (as painting, sculpture, or music) concerned primarily with the creation of beautiful objects” and “an activity requiring a fine skill”.
“Convergence” embodies fine art. While other artists limit themselves to conventional works, Pollack’s “Convergence” is gigantic. Created in 1952, it is oil on canvas, and is 93.5 inches by 155 inches. http://www.albrightknox.org/ArtStart/lPollock.html

FREE HATS, CHEATING, NEW YEAR'S EVE, AN ACCUSATION OF RAPE, AND FACIAL HAIR
HI, WOULD YOU LIKE A FREE SCOT POLLARD HAT? : I volunteered at the Indiana Pacers game on Monday night. My job was to pass out free caps with Pacers' player Scot Pollard's signature and number embroidered on front. Unfortunately, the signature was illegible, and despite the fact that we handed out over 4,000 free caps, Pollard himself didn't even play in the game. By the NBA's count, Pollard has averaged just over 5 points a year during his 7-year career. By my count, well over half of the people I handed caps to didn't even know that Pollard played for the Pacers! CHEATING... ON MY DIET : I caved on my low caloric diet. Last Friday evening I ate four small slices of a DiGiorno pizza , and then on Saturday ate an entire mini DiGiorno pizza (six slices), two cookies, and a Qdoba burrito . I knew it was wrong but did it anyway. Since then I've gone back onto the low-caloric meal plan, but not before spending a few extra moments in the bathroom. NEW YEAR'S EVE PLANS : Tonight is New Year's Eve, and I'll be volunteering at the

Civilization Fanatics' Forums COLOSSEUM Off-Topic PDA View Full Version : Abstract art WillJ Jan 23, 2004, 08:34 PM What do you think of abstract art? Do you consider it real art? Do you not understand why some pieces that just have colored rectangles can get extremely famous and expensive, yet really good looking realistic paintings can sell for $5 at a mom-and-pop store?
I've always found the modern non-objective art phenomenon pretty stupid. If a "work of art" is not pleasing to look at, can be done by a retarded dog with three legs, and doesn't even represent anything, it's not art. But apparently some of the artistic elite think otherwise. Heck, Jackson Polluck is sometimes considered the greatest American artist ever. (Click here (http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/pollock_jackson.html) to see some of his work.)
Edit: I also don't get it when art "experts" sometimes mention how a piece of non-objective abstract art "expresses the artist's feelings." What the crap? How does a bunch of splotchy paint or oddly shaped clay and/or metal display feelings? Archer 007 Jan 23, 2004, 08:43 PM

    winter abstracts: emphasis on line
these images came as a result of our recent snowstorm. while building a snowman in the front yard with my four-year-old daughter, and then clearing the driveway and walks, i couldn't help but be mesmerized by the stark contrast of the freshly fallen new snow on the tree branches around the house. every winter brings this beauty, and it doesn't typically last more than a day...knowing this i jumped into the car and drove off to a local park.
i love this theme. reducing our 3 dimensional world down to lines. borrowing god's nature to create brush strokes on a plane of film. painting with the camera. it is fascinating.
i knew beforehand the effect i wanted. i shot these images with the intention to blow out the whites, and place emphasis on the black lines of the branches. a great deal of my inspiration came from artists such as Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline.

    and Random Walks
Two ideas about probability and random: 1) Simulation is a procedure developed for answering questions about real problems by running experiments that closely resemble the real situation. (from The Art and Techniques of Simulation, p.1 and 2) The computer has allows us to work with randomness which can shift the focus from total order to mild chaos. Clayson wrote in his book: Visual Modeling with LOGO that "the addition of a little bit of randomness into a geometrical structure can be a way of giving life and animation to a static design." I understand that in economics, things have a value and that this value is ascribed to those things by humans, in regard to human priorities. And then they trade with these things. And the scarcity of a commodity is probably best presented by artworks, as there is *only one* Mona Lisa, and only one Guernica etc.
What I find odd is this: How come that artworks are sold at such mind-bogglingly high prices?
After all, a painting, which technically is nothing else but a few square feet of canvas and some paint and it is worth millions?!
I can understand the present situation now it is just somehow tradition that art gets sold for high prices.
But how did it happen, historically speaking, that artworks began to be sold at such enormously high prices? What was the economical justification for that?
I mean, could a king or a rich man simply say, "I like this picture immensely and I find it dashing, so if you want to have it, you'll have to pay me a lot of money."
That's kinda whimsical to be a reasonable economic reason for a high price, don't you think?
