ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG (American, 1925- ) Process, object, environment and artist intertwine in Robert Rauschenberg's work. He embodies most of the ideas of this century's modern art, yet his powerful, idiosyncratic works are like those of no other artist. Born Milton Rauschenberg in Texas in 1925, he received a sound art education. He attended Kansas City Art Institute in 1947, and then the renowned Academie Julien in Paris in 1948. He returned to the United States to attend Black Mountain College in North Carolina in 1949. There he studied under abstract painter Josef Albers, one of the emigres who, seeking refuge in the United States from Europe's devastation, had galvanized American art. There, too, he formed professional relationships with avant-garde composer John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham. Rauschenberg continued on to New York City, where he studied at the Art Students League until 1952. From then until 1953, he traveled in Northern Africa and Italy.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Robert Rauschenberg Biography Robert Rauschenberg is a painter, sculptor, and graphic artist known for helping to redefine American art in the 1950s and '60s, providing an alternative to the then-dominant aesthetic of Abstract Expressionism.
Born Milton Ernest Rauschenberg on October 22, 1925 in Port Arthur, Texas, Rauschenberg studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Académie Julian in Paris, before enrolling in 1948 at the legendary Black Mountain College in North Carolina. There his painting instructor was the renowned Bauhaus figure Josef Albers, whose rigid discipline and sense of method inspired Rauschenberg, as he once said, to do "exactly the reverse" of what Albers taught him.
More often, Rauschenberg's early works reflected the aesthetic of his friend, composer John Cage, another member of the Black Mountain faculty, whose music of chance occurrences and found sounds perfectly suited Rauschenberg's personality. The "white paintings' produced by Rauschenberg at Black Mountain in 1951, while they contain no image at all, are said to be so exceptionally blank and reflective that their surfaces respond and change in sympathy with the ambient conditions in which they are shown, "so you could almost tell how many people are in the room," as Rauschenberg once commented. The White Paintings are said to have directly influenced Cage in the composition of his completely "silent" piece titled 4'33" the following year.

Robert Rauschenberg: Abstract Expressionism
Jennifer Hollowell Articles in this Topic Discussions in this Topic Mar 28, 2000
"Through his art we experience the liberation of the real in it's fragmented reduction to image. Shards of the commonplace world float free of the gravitational pull of the real." (Milton) Robert Rauschenberg, born 1925, was not your typical artist by any means. His style of art, defined as "pop" went beyond the norm in that it carried things from reality into unrealistic situations. His idea of abstract expressionism was often detested because it went against the grain so much. He showed Americans that all of life could be open to art. His style was formed around the artist Cornell's work who first developed it in the 40's.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, he studied art in Paris and at several schools in the United States, including Black Mountain College, where he studied under American painter Josef Albers . His early works were boxed studies containing blueprints and paintings in black and white. During the early 1950s he produced collage paintings in which freely brushed expressionist canvases were overlaid with bits and pieces of actual textiles, photographs, and torn newspaper clippings. In 1955, he made his first “combines,” three-dimensional assemblages in which paintings were combined with found images, such as photographs, and objects of popular culture—traffic signs, light bulbs, Coca-Cola bottles, radios—to create ironic or ridiculous effects. The best known of these, Monogram (1955-1959, Moderna Museet, Stockholm), features a stuffed goat with an automobile tire around its middle. These hybrid works, emphasizing mass-production objects, had a strong influence on the pop art movement of the 1960s. After 1962, Rauschenberg experimented with silk-screen prints—first in black and white, later in color—in which repetition of imagery played a strong role. Much of his work during the 1970s and 1980s was devoted to collages, lithographs, and other forms of the graphic arts, including photography.

Rauschenberg continued on to New York City, where he studied at the Art Students League until 1952. From then until 1953, he traveled in Northern Africa and Italy. His first works included collage, and he was involved in the production of perhaps the first impromptu theatrical "happening," a performance of John Cage's Theater Piece #1 (1952). His "combine paintings" of the 1950s combined, at first, paint and objects from his own past, but later included more "found" materials like photographs that had no personal connection with the artist. He turned to planning and costuming stage performances, particula4y dance, in the 1960s, and in the 1970s he produced constructions of fragile and ephemeral materials.
