Netherlands Nationality Dutch Field Painting Printmaking Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn July 15 October 4 ) was a Dutch painter and etcher . He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. His contributions to art came in a period that historians call the Dutch Golden Age Having achieved youthful success as a portrait painter, his later years were marked by personal tragedy and financial hardship. Yet his drawings and paintings were popular throughout his lifetime, his reputation as an artist remained high and for twenty years he taught nearly every important Dutch painter. Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are exemplified especially in his portraits of his contemporaries

Basic introduction to rembrandt s work divided into chronological periods each illustrated with his works.
Rembrandt HARMENSZOON VAN RIJN (b. July 15, 1606, Leiden, Neth.d. Oct. 4, 1669, Amsterdam), Dutch painter, draftsman, and etcher of the 17th century, a giant in the history of art. His paintings are characterized by luxuriant brushwork, rich colour, and a mastery of chiaroscuro. Numerous portraits and self-portraits exhibit a profound penetration of character. His drawings constitute a vivid record of contemporary Amsterdam life. The greatest artist of the Dutch school, he was a master of light and shadow whose paintings, drawings, and etchings made him a giant in the history of art. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father was a miller who wanted the boy to follow a learned profession, but Rembrandt left the University of Leiden to study painting. His early work was devoted to showing the lines, light and shade, and color of the people he saw about him. He was influenced by the work of Caravaggio and was fascinated by the work of many other Italian artists. When Rembrandt became established as a painter, he began to teach and continued teaching art throughout his life. In 1631, when Rembrandt's work had become well known and his studio in Leiden was flourishing, he moved to Amsterdam. He became the leading portrait painter in Holland and received many commissions for portraits as well as for paintings of religious subjects. He lived the life of a wealthy, respected citizen and met the beautiful Saskia van Uylenburgh, whom he married in 1634. She was the model for many of his paintings and drawings. Rembrandt's works from this period are characterized by strong lighting effects. In addition to portraits, Rembrandt attained fame for his landscapes, while as an etcher he ranks among the foremost of all time. When he had no other model, he painted or sketched his own image. It is estimated that he painted between 50 and 60 self-portraits.

Biography Page One
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on 15th July, 1606, in Leiden, the eighth of nine children of Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn and his wife, Neeltje van Suijttbroeck. He was the first and the only of their sons whom they sent to the school for Latin. After seven years’ schooling (1613-1620), Rembrandt entered the Philosophical Faculty of Leiden University to study Classics. A short period at the university finished with starting a period of apprenticeship (1622-24) under the Italy-trained painter Jacob Isaacszoon van Swanenburgh. However, the succeeding half-year studies under Pieter Lastman, the Amsterdam artist of historical paintings, influenced Rembrandt’s work much deeper.
In 1625 the 19-year-old Rembrandt returned to Leiden and opened his own studio, which he shared with his friend of the same age, Jan Lievens. Continue... [Rembrandt's prints] brought him fame and no small advantage, in particular through the device of slight changes and small and unimportant additions, which he made on his prints, thanks to which they could be sold again as fresh ones. Nay, the demand was at that time so great that people were not considered true amateurs who did not possess the Juno with and without the crown, the Joseph with the light and the dark head and so on.
Indeed, everyone wanted to have the
Woman by the Stove - as it happened, one of his least important etchings - both with and without the stove-key, in spite of the fact that he sold the etching through his son Titus, as if it were too unimportant for himself.

See also Rembrandt Myself Baroque Art One Man Show: Rembrandt "Rembrandt never visited Italy but by the time he left his native Leyden to settle in Amsterdam in 1631, he had already been exposed to the latest developments in Baroque painting. The Dutch followers of Caravaggio had ensured that the thunderous use of light and shade and dramatic figures filling the picture surface had become familiar, as had the fluid, vigorous brushwork of Rubens and the thirst for grand, painterly illusions. Like Rubens, Rembrandt would have noted that Titian in his late work had gone in search of more reflective moods and discovered a new and glorious freedom in his brushstrokes.

Harmenszoon van Rijn Rembrandt (1606 - 1669) Rembrandt, the Dutch baroque artist, who ranks as one of the greatest painters in the history of Western art was born in Leiden on July 15, 1606. His father was a miller who wanted the boy to follow a learned profession. Rembrandt began his studies at the Latin School, and at the age of 14 he was enrolled at the University of Leiden. The program did not interest him, and he soon left to study art; first with a local master and then, in Amsterdam, with Pieter Lastman, known for his historical paintings. After six months, having mastered everything he had been taught, Rembrandt returned to Leiden, where he was soon so highly regarded that although barely 22 years old, he took his first pupils.
Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631; his marriage in 1634 to Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin of a successful art dealer, enhanced his career, bringing him in contact with wealthy patrons who eagerly commissioned portraits. In addition, Rembrandt's mythological and religious works were much in demand, and he painted numerous dramatic masterpieces such as The Blinding of Samson.
In contrast to his successful public career, however, Rembrandt's family life was marked by misfortune. Between 1635 and 1641 Saskia gave birth to four children, but only the last, Titus, survived; her own death came in 1642. Hendrickje Stoffels, engaged as his housekeeper about 1649, eventually became his common-law wife and was the model for many of his pictures.

Rembrandt Venture Partners (RVP) was established in 2004 to provide private equity capital to early stage technology companies. Rembrandt invests in a variety of sectors including Internet infrastructure, application software delivered as a service, communications, next generation wireless sectors and new media convergence. In 2007 Rembrandt successfully exited five of its portfolio companies profitably including one IPO. These include:
    Good Technologies acquired by Motorola
    Ironport acquired by Cisco
LGC Wireless acquired by ADC Communications
MetaLINCS (which was started by Rembrandt) acquired by Seagate
Cavium which has a public offering on the Nasdq (CAVM)
These exits had a combined enterprise value of approximately $2.7 Billion. Vision: As many venture funds have dramatically increased in size, and angel investment activity has declined over the past few years a void has developed in the market. Rembrandt believes there is a substantial opportunity for a fund focused on early company building. We are focused on being the firm of choice for providing capital, support and expertise to the best entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. Culture: At Rembrandt Venture Partners, we're entrepreneurs first and foremost.
