Rembrandt Peale
The second son of artist Charles Willson Peale, Rembrandt Peale followed his father's interests closely. As a young teenager he had begun to paint portraits, by 17 had made his first portrait of George Washington. He aided his father's excavation of two mastodon skeletons in 1801, and the following year traveled to London, where he exhibited the skeleton and studied with Benjamin West. Peale returned to Europe in 1808 to make portraits of important men for the gallery his father had established in Philadelphia. After Peale's return to Philadelphia in 1810, his career was varied; he became proprietor of his father's museum, taught art, wrote a popular drawing manual, pursued technological experiments, and continued to paint portraits and allegorical works. He also produced over seventy copies of his famous portrait of Washington, calling himself "the only painter living who ever saw Washington." Brady included this portrait in a special "Artist's Souvenir," along with images of Willam Page Frederick Church , and Charles Loring Elliott Mathew Brady Studio

Dutch Painter, Engraver and Draftsman
Rembrandt, the master painter, is such a giant figure in the world of art we almost never use his last name. His works are notable for their singular brushwork, incomparable use of color and mastery of light and shadow. Rembrandt also changed the way people viewed other people, by portraying religious figures as human, and humans as soulful and poetic. Though his life was marked time and again by tragedy and trouble, his art grew ever more light and soaring. Movement, Style, School or Period:

    Rembrandt's Biblical Work
Rembrandt created over 300 works of art inspired by stories from the Bible. Most of these works are drawings and etchings. In addition, there are some 60 paintings on Biblical themes. This essay offers a summary of the style and subject matter of these works.
    Development of style
The development of Rembrandt's style is reflected clearly over time. His '20s and '30s works are tempestuous, almost baroque. He does not shun the grand, dramatic scenes, while focusing mainly on the action. During this period Rembrandt's canvasses and panels are moderately sized. Examples are Balaam and the Ass (1626) - a subject previously tackled by his master Pieter Lastman - and Judas Returns the Thirty Pieces of Silver . Please note that Rembrandt never created historical pieces with large numbers of extras such as Rubens did. Rembrandt would choose a limited number of characters and capture them at a key moment. Around 1640 a change takes place. Rembrandt's preference shifts towards smaller tableaux, stilted, less exuberant and with a focus on the unambiguous expression of emotion. The first works that clearly illustrate this style shift are The Departure of the Shunamite woman (1640) en David's Parting from Jonathan (1642). Not before the mid 50s does Rembrandt return to larger sized compositions. These include works as

Identifying true old masters - and spotting the fakes - is a rarefied art. Dan Rockmore wants to make it a science. By Bijal P. Trivedi Page 1 of 3 next
Feature: The Rembrandt Code Plus: Is This Rembrandt Real? In a photography studio nestled in the high attic of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, mathematician Dan Rockmore stands in front of Flora , rocking back and forth on his heels like a shy schoolboy. He leans close to the figure on the canvas to peer at her face. Unshackled from her heavy wood gilt frame, the beautiful Roman goddess of spring and flowers appears vulnerable. "It's like seeing actors backstage at Broadway, without their makeup, drinking beers, and smoking cigarettes," Rockmore says quietly, as if the mere vibration of his voice could send the 350-year-old painting, worth about $40 million, crashing to the floor.

‘Gezellig’ is one of the most difficult words to translate in the Dutch language. There is no literal equivalent or similar word in English. The words ‘cozy’ and ‘delightful’ in English probably have the closest meaning, but gezellig means much more. Another possible way to describe ‘gezelligheid’ would be good atmosphere. So, a fantastic combination of coziness, enjoyment, relaxation, well laid-back at home or chilled-out in a bar, while being in good company, is ‘gezellig’. The most romantic definition of 'gezellig' could be ‘an atmosphere that knows no time’.
The staff at Café Rembrandt hope you will enjoy our ‘gezelligheid’ and wish you a ‘Smakelijk Eten!’

Ettore Bugatti’s younger brother Rembrandt was born in Milan on 16 October 1884. As his parents moved in a circle of friends that included the composers Giacomo Puccini and Leoncavallo, the sculptor Ercole Rosa and the painter Giovanni Segantini, he was exposed to artists and the world of art from a very early age. Inspired and encouraged by the sculptor Prince Paul Troubetzkoy, Rembrandt soon himself embarked on a career as an artist. His earliest works were woodcarvings; in 1900 he began studying at the Milan Academy of Arts and at 16 years of age he was already a well-trained sculptor. He was exceptionally gifted and showed a particular talent for drawing. It was not long before he developed his own unique style and discovered his primary subject: animals. His oldest extant bronze sculpture (from the year 1901) represents a lowing cow, and by 1903 he had already shown his work at exhibitions in Milan, Turin, and Venice. In 1904, Rembrandt moved with his family to Paris, where he was accepted into the Soci©t© Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Three years later he relocated to Antwerp, where he experienced the most successful year of his artistic career. Antwerp was home to Belgium’s most influential art school, the “Antwerp Academy”, and what’s more: the city boasted a zoo showcasing numerous exotic animals. It was during this period that Rembrandt produced his sculpture of a rearing elephant, a copy of which adorned his brother’s world-famous Bugatti Royale in the 1920s.

Welcome to REMBRANDT Re pository of M olecular Bra in N eoplasia D a t a) This site, a joint initiative of the NCI and NINDS hosts diverse types of molecular research and clinical trials data related to brain cancers, including gliomas, along with a wide variety of web-based analysis tools that readily facilitate the understanding of critical correlations among the different data types. Our aim is to be the access portal for a national molecular, genetic, and clinical database of several thousand primary brain tumors that is fully open and accessible to all investigators (including intramural and extramural researchers), as well as the public at-large. The data can be downloaded as raw files containing all the information gathered through the primary experiments or can be mined using the informatics support provided. This comprehensive brain tumor data portal will allow for easy ad hoc querying across multiple domains, thus allowing physician-scientists to make the right decisions during patient treatments Our main focus is to molecularly characterize a large number of adult and pediatric primary brain tumors and to correlate those data with extensive retrospective and prospective clinical data. Specific data types hosted here are gene expression profiles, real time PCR assays, CGH and SNP array information, sequencing data, tissue array results and images, proteomic profiles, and patients? response to various treatments. Clinical trials? information and protocols are also accessible. This comprehensive brain tumor data portal will allow for easy ad hoc querying across multiple domains, thus allowing physician-scientists to make the right decisions during patient treatments.
