Rothko, Mark (1903-1970), Russian-born American painter, known for abstract paintings in which soft-edged rectangles of color seem to float weightlessly against undefined backgrounds. A major figure in the abstract expressionism movement, Rothko used color to convey a range of emotion and what the artist described as a religious experience.
Rothko was born Marcus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russia (now Daugavpils, Latvia), and emigrated to the United States in 1913. He attended Yale University from 1921 to 1923, then left to settle in New York City. During the next five years he occasionally attended classes at the Art Students League, most notably with American painter Max Weber, but he was essentially self-taught. In New York he visited museums and the studios of artists such as Milton Avery, whose interest in simplified forms and large areas of flat, unvaried color would exercise a profound influence on him. Rothko also befriended painter Adolph Gottlieb, with whom he shared a passion for non-Western art, and later, an interest in lyrical abstraction.
Rothko also took cues from the European surrealism movement, which saw artistic creativity as a key to unlocking the unconscious. Slow Swirl by the Edge of the Sea (1944, Museum of Modern Art, New York) reflects his exposure to this movement. The painting uses a more abstract visual vocabulary than his earlier works, its forms are more curvilinear and organic, and color has begun to play a larger role. In this painting, Rothko meditated on the origins of life: how it emerged from the sea and how its origins could function as a metaphor for the origins of consciousness.

Mark Rothko (1903-1970), Russian
Mark Rothko was born Marcus Rothkowitz on September 25, 1903, in Dvinsk, Russia. In 1913, he left Russia and settled with the rest of his family in Portland, Oregon. Rothko attended Yale University, New Haven, on a scholarship from 1921 to 1923. That year, he left Yale without receiving a degree and moved to New York. In 1925, he studied under Max Weber at the Art Students League. He participated in his first group exhibition at the Opportunity Galleries, New York, in 1928. During the early 1930s, Rothko became a close friend of Milton Avery and Adolph Gottlieb. His first solo show took place at the Portland Art Museum in 1933. R othko’s first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in 1933. In 1935, he was a founding member of the Ten, a group of artists sympathetic to abstraction and Expressionism . He executed easel paintings for the WPA Federal Art Project from 1936 to 1937. By 1936, Rothko knew Barnett Newman. In the early 1940s, he worked closely with Gottlieb, developing a painting style with mythological content, simple flat shapes, and imagery inspired by primitive art. By mid-decade, his work incorporated Surrealist techniques and images. Peggy Guggenheim gave Rothko a solo show at Art of This Century in New York in 1945.

Articles About Rothko, Mark
January 31, 2008 East Marion Cemetery, Suffolk County, New York: the odor of pine trees, grass and inactivity loiters in the air. Tall pine trees responsible for the pitch smell stand in the distance like a living, green wall around the cemetery. In symbology, evergreen signifies immortality, which is ironic, since all illusions of immortality have come and gone for the permanent residents of East Marion Cemetery. The dead know only disappointment.

Rothko, whose original surname was Rothkovich, was born in Dvinsk, Russia (now Daugavpils, Latvia), and was brought to the United States in 1913. He later attended Yale University and studied briefly at the Art Students League in New York but was largely self-taught as an artist. He had his first one-man show in New York in 1933. Rothko's work in the 1930s espoused the social realist movement. In the 1940s, influenced by Surrealism , he developed a more imaginative approach that drew on primitive religion, as, for example, Baptismal Scene (1945, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York). Gradually his work became abstract, consisting of large, hazily defined rectangles of colour—murky, delicate, or glowing—used to convey emotion. They belong to the colour-field branch of Abstract Expressionism. Examples include

Rothko, Mark
Mark Rothko
Russian-born American painter, widely considered as one of the most prominent figures in Abstract expressionism. Trained at the University of Yale and Arts Student League in New York, Rothko was initially influenced by Surrealism and Expressionism. His most famous paintings are ones where he has painted parallel-placed large rectangular shapes, generally in a vertical format. There hazy edges seem to make the rectangular expanses float on canvas. He regarded 14 paintings that he was commissioned to do for a chapel in Houston (1967-1969) as his masterpieces.
