Glad you like the skin tones on mine. They are actually a bit more lively than the photo shows, wish I could figure out how to take a better photo of paintings.
Yours is phenomenal. I think, though, that her left nostril is off. I think maybe this is due to: 1 The ridge of her nose is too sharp, especially where the ridge changes into a deep shadow at the top of the nostril; Boug's tones are more gradual from highlight to dark (see attached, "annotated" piece of Boug's work). 2 In Boug's, there is a significant bit of flesh between the leftmost edge of the nostril "hole" and the left edge of the surrounding skin. In yours, the skin surrounding the nostril is a relatively thin strip.
I probably wouldn't have noticed if it weren't for the fact that other than this, it's perfect!
Dan butka 10-17-2004, 05:08 PM Here is an update of my version of le crepuscule. The pics shows a quick imprimatura. Since I am trying to stay away from solvents, I did the imprimatura with max raw umber and used water to thin it out. This combination seems to have a nack for staining the canvas very quickly.. in turn making it very hard to wipe out very powerful highlights. I am thinking of trying adding some max linseed oil in the mix next time to help.

Unlocking the color of white.
Teaching students how to unlock the color of white is my passion. Like so many other art teachers, I struggled for years teaching color wheels and making value scales, only to be frustrated when students produced colorful charts and then made colorless paintings. I was teaching students how to mix color, but not how to see and experience color! My frustration became clear. How do I transfer my love of color to my students?
Solving the Puzzle
I reflected on how often I stared at John Singer Sargent's paintings, awed by how he used a bluish-lilac color and a yellowish-gray to form the delicate whites of a dress. Then there was Edward Hopper's majestic lighthouse, a white tower clad in a golden-yellowish light, completed by a steel bluish-purple shadow applied with the clarity of an eclipse.
One morning, I recognized what was missing: excitement over color, generated by personal discovery. Some students were clamoring around my desk, trying to tell me about the color of the sky they saw during a late-evening thunderstorm: "You should have seen it. At first the sky was a silvery-bluish, kind of like stone-washed jeans. Then inky-bluish clouds swallowed it up. Some were even a greenish-purple color. It was like a scene in The Wizard of Oz."

Overview
Lesson 2 Lesson 3 Lesson 4 COLOR CONTRAST "Color is the keyboard, the shapes are the notes, and the artist is the hand that plays, creating vibrations in the soul." — Wassily Kandinsky Essential Questions What is color? What is contrast? How can we recognize contrasting and colorful elements within our lives, interpersonal relationships, surrounding environment, and other art forms? In what ways do you think contrast exists in you daily life? What role does the psychological effects of color influence your decisions or sense of well-being? How can the design element of color effectively and creatively combine with the principle of contrast within a work of art? How does the incorporation of color with contrast produce expressive themes within an artwork? Elements of Design, Color and Value , color has the power to interpret our environment. It provides an ever-changing source of visual and emotional stimulation within numerous aspects of our lives. Gatto explores how color records events, designates and identifies, establishes moods, sells products, attracts attention, symbolizes, decorates, expresses feelings, creates environments. Color has many properties such as value, temperature, intensity, complements, and neutrality; however, when an artist combines color with the principle of contrast, interest and attention to an idea or area occurs. Contrasting themes such as apathy and caring might be the inspiring force behind an expressive or provocative work of art, which may perhaps be intensified by employing visual characteristics such as a warm/cool, colorful/colorless, bright/dull, or complementary color scheme. The sensation of tension is readily depicted through the use of complementary hues.

Sargent, John Singer Sargent, John Singer (1856-1925), American painter, who is known for his glamorous portraits of eminent or socially prominent people of the period. Born in Florence, Italy, of American parents, Sargent spent much of his youth travelling around Europe with his mother. He was exposed to art from an early age, and studied painting in Italy, France, and Germany. In 1874 he was sent to Paris for formal art education, which he received at the ‰cole des Beaux-Arts and in the studio of the noted French portraitist Charles Carolus-Duran. Sargent gradually established a reputation in Paris, successfully exhibiting portraits at the Salon, until his portrait of Madame Gautreau (the work is also known as Madame X, 1883-1884, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) created controversy with its unusual format. Following this scandal, Sargent began to spend time in London and settled there permanently in 1886. Intially criticized in England for over-technicality, Sargent's skill as a portraitist was increasingly sought after during the 1890s. He made several trips to the United States, where he was very well received. Around 1907 Sargent tired of portrait painting and accepted few commissions. He then worked chiefly on European scenes in watercolour, in a notably Impressionistic style. Sargent's portraits fell into disfavour after his death and were disapproved of for what some believed to be a superficial brilliance. Since that time, however, these same canvases have been acknowledged for their naturalism and superb technical skill. Among Sargent's more famous works are
