Abstract
Science centres planetariums and similar places such as visitor centres and public observatories have an essential role to play in school education. Even in states where astronomy is in the curriculum teachers often have a limited knowledge of the subject. Consequently they are happy to bring their students to a place where they can be instructed by professional astronomy educators. Where astronomy is not on the curriculum the centres provide teachers with the opportunity of using the appeal of astronomy to excite students about science. In this paper we will look at a number of examples of what science centres and planetariums provide to school students. Sydney Observatory is open for school visits throughout each school term. Visits are highly structured making use of all the facilities of the observatory in informing the students and exciting them about astronomy. Facilities available include a new interactive 3-D theatre a very small planetarium modern and historic telescopes an exhibition and a lecture room.

SFKC Home Program Summary Program Summary Like Science Friday Host Ira Flatow, you may have memories of gazing at a planetarium dome and being swept away by the twinkling show that made you feel as if you were atop a lonely mountain, blanketed by stars. Todays planetarium shows offer much more than a look at the night sky. Some can even take you inside the gas pillars of a forming star. Todays shows have to compete with Hollywood and computer-generated games, so the technologies that drive them are sophisticated, digital wonders that can bring the stars and space phenomena to life. The wonder of the stars drives many amateur astronomers out into the night-and keeps them there, sometimes performing work much like that of their paid counterparts. One amateur, David Levy, has discovered several comets, including comet Shoemaker-Levy, which bears his name. Better equipment is opening up the skies for amateur astronomers to make important discoveries, possibly even discoveries of extrasolar planets. As one science teacher who called in to the program pointed out, given the opportunity to use telescopes, students take to astronomy like space debris to a black hole. Below youll find some ways to engage your students in such heavenly pursuits.

About, above: Part 1 - cardboard planetariums throughout the streets of Sydney
Submitted by AliaK on Tue, 2008-02-19 18:25 Please be advised that on Friday 22nd + Saturday 23rd February, 2008, there will be three Cardboard Planetariums installed throughout the Sydney CBD, rain, hail or shine. You are very much invited. Details of exact locations will be advised on THE JUNE FOX website on Thursday 21st Feb. The splendor of the night sky has been a source of wonder, discovery and agitation for our species throughout human history. The observation of the heavens has defined religions, revolutionized scientific thought, guided navigators, and inspired countless mythologies. It has been said that 'they who cannot see the night sky, cannot see...' In most urban environments, and cities in particular, light pollution renders the night sky down to a few of the brightest stars and planets, obscuring the majority of what has been so essential to our species' development. Perhaps it doesn't matter. Perhaps the stimulus of stargazing is not essential to a happy life. But just in case... The Cardboard Planetariums will be found throughout the city, hanging in space, rotating lazily around their central hanging axis. You are welcome to duck inside, and to stand for a moment (or as long as you like) inside a solar-powered simulation of the night sky.

Planetariums nowadays include special effects, laser technology, and state-of-the-art sound systems that reveal a galaxy that might otherwise be shrouded in cloud and city light. Some planetariums also hold laser shows where laser graphics, animation, and midair-beam displays are choreographed to music by artists such as Pink Floyd, Metallica, and the Beastie Boys. Numinus that can help with their unique StarDomes StarDomes are durable molded fiberglass domes that are light weight, require no assembly and are easy to install. The true constellations are mapped out against a hand painted airbrushed sky with billowy clouds all around the horizon to create a magical sky full of twinkling stars on your ceiling. A cove light lines the perimeter of dome and can be dimmed via remote control to provide cool sunrise and sunset effects. There you can view the stars and planets and learn about celestial events that you really can't see with all the city lights blocking out the stars. Here's a tour:
      Buehler Planetarium
Built in 1965, the Buehler Planetarium is named in honor of aviation pioneer Emil Buehler. In 36 years the planetarium has presented planetarium shows and astronomical programs to almost a million visitors.
On the day of my visit, there were 17 children and 10 adult chaperons from the kindergarten class at Happyland Day School in Fort Lauderdale. The group gathered into the 101-seat auditorium awaiting the first showing of the day as the guide explained that the room was about to get dark to simulate the night sky. The children expressed some rumbled concerns. However, once the lights were off, and the show began, nothing but oohs and aahhs filled the air from the tough audience of 5- and 6-year-olds.
"I was here approximately 10 years ago and the show was way over the children's heads," said kindergarten teacher Vicki Adams. "But this show was definitely geared to younger children and kept their interest with the musical accompaniment. It built to their level and retained their involvement." The show, In my Backyard, is a fantastic introduction to the sky and the planetarium itself. You will join in the planet rap while learning about bears and lions that appear in your nighttime sky. Alex Green and Brooks Gilmore, both 6, were mesmerized by the rhyming poem that named all nine planets and their locations.
