Raiders balance hurt the tired Jets
By Eric Dickerson
Special to ABC Sports Online
OAKLAND, Calif. There was no feeling-out process in this game. Jerry Rice caught yet another touchdown pass in his 24th career playoff game. I didn't think the Oakland Raiders would come out as confidently as they did, especially on offense. It surprised me to see them operate in the no-huddle. It took the Jets by surprise, too, and got them tired in a hurry. The Raiders mixed it up well. Charlie Garner established himself as the No. 1 back, and if you talk to coach Jon Gruden, he'll tell you that Garner is their go-to guy. Tyrone Wheatley ran well inside and Zack Crockett was excellent in the short yardage situations. It was Garner's slashing, though, that really wore the Jets down. On another note, Jerry Rice was absolutely phenomenal. You have to give it to him. He's still a great football player. At 39 years old, people were saying he should retire, but he looked like he could play for another two or three years. He's truly one of the most remarkable players I've ever seen. The Jets looked like a tired football team in the first half. The cross-country travel does have an effect. I would have gotten the team out there earlier perhaps Tuesday to get acclimated. I might not have even gone back to New York.

I'm thrilled to be coming back
By Eric Dickerson
MondayNightFootball.com
Working as a sideline reporter for Monday Night Football was scary at first. I had never done that kind of work before, but I like challenges and I'm glad Don Ohlmeyer felt that I could do the job. During his 11-year NFL career, Eric Dickerson played for the Rams, Colts, Raiders and Falcons. There's a big difference between just doing interviews and being an actual sports reporter. I never thought the job was easy, but when you're finally out there in front of the cameras, you quickly find out how hard the job really is. We were lucky to have some amazing games this year. From the season opener with Denver against the St. Louis Rams all the way through the playoffs, we had a handful of incredible contests. It was a lot of fun. One of the coolest moments for me was in the Seattle-Kansas City game in Week 5 when Elvis Grbac threw a ball out of bounds and I caught it. All the fans went nuts. It was pretty funny. I had no idea if the entire crew would be asked back, but I am thrilled it was. I enjoyed working with everyone. I definitely worked the closest with Melissa Stark as fellow sideline reporters, and I'm glad we get a chance to work together again. With this year under our belts, we'll be that much better next season. Just like in baseball, football, any kind of team, it takes a while to mesh as a unit. But we got better and better each week, and if we have great games again in 2001, we'll have an even better season than this one.

Eric Dickerson, an NFL Hall of Famer and former All-Pro running back, joins ABC Sports as a reporter for "Monday Night Football."
A native of Sealy, Texas, Dickerson was a two-time All-America selection at Southern Methodist, and was chosen in the first round of the 1983 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. An immediate success, he established rookie records for most rushing attempts (390), most rushing yards gained (1,808) and most touchdowns rushing (18). His efforts earned him All-Pro, Pro Bowl, Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors.
In his second season, Dickerson continued his onslaught of the NFL record book. Twelve times during that season he gained more than 100 yards rushing, breaking the record of 100-yard games set by O.J. Simpson. His 2,105 total rushing yards in a season shattered Simpson's 1973 record of 2,003 yards in a single season.
A workhorse runner with the Rams, Dickerson gained more than 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons with the team. In three of those seasons he gained more than 1,800 yards. After playing just three games for the Rams during the strike-shortened 1987 season, Dickerson was dealt to the Indianapolis Colts. Although he played just nine games with the Colts that year, he still managed to gain 1,011 yards to finish the season with 1,288.
In 1988, Dickerson, with 1,659 yards rushing, became the first Colt to lead the league in rushing since Alan Ameche in 1955. The following season he became the first player in NFL history to gain more than 1,000 yards in seven consecutive seasons. He also became the seventh back to gain more than 10,000 yards and the fastest ever to do so, reaching the milestone in just 91 games.

Postgame notes: Flutie should've come in sooner
By Eric Dickerson
Special to MondayNightFootball.com
With the Buffalo Bills' playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Wade Phillips made a mistake by not putting Doug Flutie into the game sooner than he did. Rob Johnson was having a ton of problems, and considering the magnitude of that football game, by the time Flutie came in, it was simply too late. Rob Johnson was harassed by the Colts' defense all night long. Just talking to Phillips, I get the sense that he just doesn't like Flutie. For whatever reason, I don't know. Maybe it's because the media puts so much pressure on him or because he is the most popular athlete in the city. Personally, I just have the feeling that he doesn't want Flutie to play or succeed, which is sad. Flutie could play for another team next year and be very successful. He can still run and he can still throw. It would have to be the kind of situation that suits him, though. He doesn't want to be on a young team that's trying to rebuild. He either needs a team that needs a solid backup or a good team that doesn't have a good veteran quarterback. There would be no point for him to be on a team like Cincinnati or San Diego that is light years from being a contender. For the Colts
