Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Deacon Jones , born in 1938, American football player, considered by many to be the best defensive end ever to play in the National Football League (NFL). During his 14-year career, Jones terrorized opposing quarterbacks with his quickness and agility. He also coined the term sack, which refers to a play in which a quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage. David Jones was born in Eatonville, Florida. He played college football for South Carolina State College and Mississippi Vocational, where he earned the nickname Deacon for leading his team in a prayer before each game. Jones’s collegiate career was not outstanding, but professional scouts did notice that he possessed incredible speed and frequently outran the running backs they were scouting. The Los Angeles Rams selected Jones in the 14th round of the 1961 NFL draft. In Los Angeles he became a member of the Fearsome Foursome, joining Lamar Lundy
