Namath was lovable rogue
By Larry Schwartz

"He was a guy that came along and broke a lot of the conventions. He was like a rebel with a cause. It was like traveling with a rock star. He just was a magnet. He's attracting people. And mostly young people. And talk about excitement and energy. Wow!" says former teammate John Dockery about Joe Namath on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. There always seemed to be something magical about Joe Namath, a rebel at a time when the country appreciated one. He was cocky, but in a likable way. The image of the swinging bachelor as much as his rocket-like arm helped make him the most glorified football player of his time. Joe Namath led the Jets to a 16-7 upset win over the Colts in Super Bowl III. He was Broadway Joe, the guy who guaranteed a Super Bowl victory for a three-touchdown underdog New York Jets team - and then delivered. He was a charismatic presence who became a larger-than-life figure. At 21, he was a star. At 25, he was a legend. His road roommate said it was like traveling with a Beatle. "The late '60s and the early '70s were times of compelling social and political upheaval," wrote Tony Kornheiser in

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a Valentine.
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.
If I'd been out till quarter to three.
Would you lock the door.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When i'm sixty-four.
You'll be older too,
And if I say the word, I could stay with you. I could be handy, mending a fuse When your lights ha ve gone. You can knit a sweater by the fireside Sunday morning go for a ride, Doing the garden, digging the weeds, Who could ask for more. Will you still need me, will you still feed me When I'm sixty-four. faba 05-31-2007, 08:57 AM Happy Birthday Joe Willie- jets icon. 05-31-2007, 09:36 AM Happy Birthday to the greatest New York Jet of all-time!!!:yahoo:  Blackout™ 05-31-2007, 10:12 AM

Z Joe Namath Biography Joseph William Namath (born May 31, 1943) was an American football quarterback for the American Football League's New York Jets in the 1960s. He is best known for predicting his team's unlikely victory in the third AFL-NFL World Championship Game, over Don Shula's NFL Baltimore Colts (currently known as the Indianapolis Colts).
Namath was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and was a star player in football, as well as basketball and baseball, while in high school. When he graduated he received offers from six Major League Baseball teams, but decided instead to avail himself of one of the many offers from college football programs, and attended the University of Alabama, playing under coach Bear Bryant from 1962-65. During this period the Crimson Tide rose to become a national force in college football.
Despite having suffered a serious knee injury in his senior year, Namath was the number-one draft pick in the AFL the year he graduated from Alabama, and signed a contract with the AFL's New York Jets the day after starring in the Orange Bowl. This knee injury, which caused his knees to swell up with fluid and require periodic draining, plagued Namath for the rest of his career. On some occasions, Namath had to have his knee drained at halftime so that he could finish a game. Later in life, long after he left football, he had to have knee replacement surgery on both legs.
In the 1965 college draft, Namath was passed up by the NFL as "too expensive". Signed to the AFL's New York Jets team by Hall of Fame owner Sonny Werblin, Namath was the first pro quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards in a season (1967). He was a three-time American Football League All-Star, although plagued with knee injuries through much of his career. Still, he produced many exceptional performances, one of which came in the 1968 AFL title game, when he threw three touchdown passes to lead New York to a 27-23 win over the defending American Football League Champion Oakland Raiders. This 1968 season earned him the Hickok Belt as top professional athlete of the year.

The misguided youth thought I had small fingers, they just looked short when I played pool I reckon. Thats when the nickname found me and has haunted me ever since. I blame Joey Hayhurst myself, he was obsessed with Quincy at the time and more than anything else, I think he just liked saying 'stumps' in a Quincy style accent.
Then the name Jacques adopted me through my late teenage years. Abreviated to Jcq, I found it a tad more bearable than Stumps anyhow and some of my mates still call me it now.
I must shed nicknames and adopt new ones every 4 years or so. Couple of years ago, me and 2 mates in work decided to name ourselves, Iceman, Goose and Maverick. We were dicking about and very bored in work and 'decorated' our part of the office with Tip Ex. Had 'Iceman' in scrawly tippex writing on the back of my chair. The boss came up with the MD to take him on a tour of the department and there were three prize pricks pissing about with correction fluid. The 3 wingmen split up shortly after. Mav left to join the police and his replacement, Hollywood, just wasnt the same. Still have my customised mug and drink my morning brew out of it everyday. The 'ICE' written on the side has faded a bit but its still a sight to behold.
