Special to ESPN.com
"Some of my vivid images of Jerry Rice are him working out at the Pro Bowl. Here you are, after he wins the Super Bowl, he's played in front of 500 million people. Less than a week later, he's out there running wind sprints to play in what is our only exhibition game," says NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Rice was MVP of Super Bowl XXIII with 11 catches for 215 yards against the Bengals. Gaudy statistics drew pro scouts to Jerry Rice when he played for obscure Mississippi Valley State. His pass-catching skills sold them on his potential. His MVP performance in an all-star game sealed the analysis: Rice was worth a first-round draft pick. But National Football League teams, renowned for attention to detail, played Rice short. Most didn't have him at the top of their draft lists, didn't even rate him as the best wide receiver. Rice had come from a predominantly African-American college in the lowly regarded Southwestern Athletic Conference, a product of a gimmicky, spread-the-field passing offense that often ran up the score. Rice's competition was suspect, the thinking went, as was his college coaching. The San Francisco 49ers thought differently. They thought enough of Archie Cooley, Rice's coach, to pick his brain on his unorthodox offense. They thought enough of Rice to trade up and take him with the 16th selection in the 1985 draft.

Jerry Rice Jerry Rice was born in Crawford Mississippi , on October 13, 1962 , the sixth of eight children. Always active and energetic as a youngster, Jerry loved to run, ride horses, and play the usual casual sports with his siblings and friends. Although shy and rather quiet, he excelled at sports in high school, starring in basketball, track and field, and during his last two years, football (Silver, 1996). Both Jerry and his older brother, Tom, were talented players and both were offered football scholarships to college. Jerry attracted the attention of a good number of colleges, but he accepted the offer of Mississippi Valley State after being personally scouted by that team’s coach, Archie Cooley (www.jerryricefootball.com).
Cooley’s Delta Devils played a strong passing offence which gave Jerry four years to work on the skills that would take him to the top of the list of NFL receivers. He caught 112 receptions for 1,845 yards and 28 touchdowns in his senior year. By the time he left college he had set 18 NCAA Division II records, finishing with a college career total of 4,693 receiving yards (Rice autobiography). o Courtesy of JerryRiceFootball.com

PEACE DEL PLAYA ENT November 12, 2007, 05:02 AM With head coach Mike Nolan not back from handling a personal family matter in time for practice, assistant head coach Mike Singletary ran Saturday's session, the last for the 49ers before they head to Seattle.
“Coach said that might happen," said Singletary. "I told him to do what he needed to do and that we would be fine here. He knows that and when he gets back we will be ready to rock.”
Singletary said there were no changes to the team's injury report, although he gave a high assessment of running back Frank Gore who took most of the practice without showing any ill effects from his ankle injury.
"He looked great," said Singletary. "He made some great cuts and it was good to see him out here. I think he is doing fantastic.”
Nolan did return to the team headquarters by mid-afternoon on Saturday. Nolan usually announces the team captains at the end of the final practice of the week. He will instead name the team captains for Monday during meetings on Sunday.

Summary:
Jerry Rice has been called the best pro football player ever. In spite of Rices legendary gridiron skills, or even his ability to transform himself into an instant ballroom-dance prodigy on ABCs hit TV series Dancing with the Stars , the surprising fact is, a guy like Jerry Rice is made and not just born. In Go Long! Rice shares the inspirational lessons and empowering practices that have helped him attain success, both on the football field and off. Through the ups and downs of Rices life and incomparable career, we discover how self-motivation, determination, and humility are the keys to achievement and true fulfillment.
Its been a long journey for Jerry Rice, from his childhood in Starkville, Mississippi, to a certain berth in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As a kid, he was always working toward something, even if he wasnt sure what it was. Rice honed his hand-eye coordination by catching airborne bricks tossed by his siblings while on the job with their bricklayer father, and he raneverywhere. From these humble beginnings, Rice blazed a path to greatness in college and the NFLa trip that was fueled by tireless effort and belief in a few simple principles, among them that achievement is a voyage, not a destination; that modesty and perseverance, not talent, are what determine how far you will go; and that everyone should strive to be a role model. Rice even demonstrates these rules in action, breaking down the greatest games from his stellar career.
