Sanders' humility makes him distinctive
By M.B. Roberts
Special to ESPN.com
"If there was ever an artist, he was a Picasso. He was one of the few that would make other athletes' jaws drop. You'd go, 'Oh, man, did you see that?' You'd call up another top running back and go, 'Yo, Dickerson, did you check that out?' " said Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Think of Barry Sanders as a coin. "Heads" is the record-setting running back who was described as electrifying, explosive, mesmerizing and unstoppable. "Tails" is the quiet, humble, religious, man who doesn't like attention, treasures his privacy and does his own laundry. Flip a coin. You got either a terrific player or a nice guy. First, the player. His best year was 1997, when the 5-foot-8, 200-pound Sanders became the third runner to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. His 2,053 yards put him behind Eric Dickerson (2,105 in 1984) and ahead of O.J. Simpson (2,003 in 1973). Sanders, who played 10 years with the Detroit Lions, is third all-time in NFL rushing, trailing only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton. He had 15,269 yards when he unexpectedly retired before the 1999 season. He decided that breaking Payton's record of 16,726 yards was not all that important to him and it was Smith, who started in the NFL a year after Sanders, who snapped Payton's mark.

He was notorious for sometimes running the full width of the field to gain only a yard on a play then, on the next, suddenly breaking through a hole for a 60 yard gain.
Barry Sanders retired from football, having gained 15,269 yards and 109 touchdowns, the former statistic placing him behind only Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith.
Sanders's retirement from playing in 1999 was a matter of some controversy. Two years beforehand, Sanders had renewed his contract with the Lions and received a $38 million signing bonus. When he retired with several years left on his contract, the Lions demanded that he return $7 million of the bonus. Sanders refused, and the Lions sued and eventually won a judgment against him.
In 2004, Barry Sanders was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 1988, Sanders won the Heisman Trophy while attending Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Multimedia 2 items Barry Sanders , born in 1968, American professional football player, an outstanding running back for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). He became noted for his quickness, strength, and exceptional ability to change directions while running at top speed. The determined and hard-working back was the first player in NFL history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in ten consecutive seasons. Barry David Sanders was born in Wichita, Kansas, and educated at Oklahoma State University. In 1988, his junior season at Oklahoma State, he set numerous National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) records. They included scoring 37 touchdowns on the ground, rushing for 2,628 yards, and gaining 3,250 all-purpose yards (yards gained from rushing, pass receptions, and kickoff and punt returns). For his accomplishments that season Sanders won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Award as college football's best player. After the 1988 season Oklahoma State was placed on probation for violating various NCAA regulations, and Sanders requested permission to enter the NFL draft instead of completing his senior year. The request was granted, and he was selected by the Lions in the first round of the 1989 draft. Although some speculated that Sanders, at 5 ft 8 in (172 cm) and 200 lb (90 kg), might be too small to play on the professional level, he made an immediate impact. During the 1989 season he rushed for 1,470 yards and 14 touchdowns and earned the NFL's rookie of the year award.

CHUD Forums Sports PDA View Full Version : Emmitt's Place in History Tongaonevai 02-03-2005, 06:47 PM Now that Emmitt has officially retired I am curious to hear where people rank him all time among running backs. I know this is impossible to do with different era's and all but fun nonetheless. My list would go something like this...
1. Jim Brown
2. Barry Sanders
3-5 is very close with Emmitt, Sweetness and OJ.
What says you? Guttenberg Fan Club 02-03-2005, 06:55 PM I guess it really depends on how you look at the best - most productive? Without a doubt it's Emmitt. Most talented? He's pretty far down on the list. He really didn't do anything better than anyone else besides maybe staying relatively healthy.
I'd put above him Brown, Sanders, Payton, OJ and maybe even Sayers and Campbell. tcjsavannah 02-03-2005, 07:02 PM Emmitt will face a little backlash, especially as people point to the tremendous Dallas Olines and say that he's a product of the system, but there's no doubt in my mind he's a top 10 all-time back, maybe top five. He's not better than Brown, and he's probably not better than Sayers or Walter. He might not even be better than Earl Campbell.
But he was better than Sanders.
